I have been spending a lot of time at the HD Garden Center lately. Every trip I can't help but stop by and see what they have in the fig department. I have been seeing some variety rotating through. So far this season a various times I have seen Mission, Brown Turkey, Kadota, and Panache. I saw the Panache today for the first time. All the trees I have seen have had at least 5 or 6 figs growing. A quick question on the Panache...when does the variegation start to show up on the fruit. I didnt see any variegation on the fruit at HD, but I was wondering if it was too immature. I have read so many stories on the here about mismarked figs at the big box stores. I was wondering if this could be another case. What fig varieties are you seeing in your area?

Panache figs are verigated from the start. There should be noticeable yellow striping on the trees branching also.

Hmm interesting about the Panache. I definitely didn't see any variegation and I looked close. I purchased a very young Panache from Rolling River a few weeks and I see no variegation on the the trunk. I wonder if there might have been a mix-up for them.

Here in Texas, I saw mainly Celeste and Brown Turkey at HD. Occasionally they have Texas Ever Bearing and Magnolia. Walmart had mainly Kadota. Last year they also had Black Mission. Lowe's had Celeste and Brown Turkey and occasionally Chicago Hardy. Each store might have a unique item as I saw this week at Walmart. I went to three different Walmart stores before I found my new 6 foot Hachiya Persimmon tree on sale. As I experienced a Celeste from HD is not the same Celeste from Lowe's. This is just an example of what you might notice when dealing with these stores. It has to do with the supplier. This is the third leaf for my Panache (from an online nursery) and no sign of fruit yet. So if you see fruit on your tree, you're ahead. See pictures of the leaves on my tree.

Unfortunately my Panache is probably a year or two from fruiting. The fruit was on the one from Home Depot, but is wasnt striped so who knows what it was. I can see some variegation on your branch. I dont see any stripes on mine. Hopefully mine will pop-up eventually. I know that if they dont show I wont be the first person to buy one tree and get another.

Shawn, Your tree can still be a Panachee, but a reverted one (with the lost variegation). I have one of those. The cutting was nicely striped and the wood and figs after rooting (have about 6 hanging now) is not. The figs are superb though, if you want them just to eat, do not worry about the stripes. I saw recently a nicely striped Panachee at the San Gabriel Nursery, $39.99, about 4 ft tall. Was a beautiful plant, but I already have one.
