Figs Croatia,Montenegro and Bosnia Herzegovina

So my misses had her heart set on a summer holiday in Croatia this August.Croatia is well known for its figs and as they are ripe that time of year I wasn't going to argue lol.

The short and long of it is we're going to be staying near Dubrovnik, I'm planning day trips to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro as were not far from both borders.

Does anyone, either members from those countries or members who have visited, have any tips on fig related places to visit?

In the Dubrovnik area you will find many fig trees. I remember from my holidays in Cavtat that a lot of people grow figs in their backyards. Fresh figs are found on every market. Sometimes people sell you fresh figs at the roadside. At that time I wasn't into growing figs, but I think most of the figs were of the Adriatic / Dalmatie type (which is not a surprise). I've also visited Mostar and Montenegro but don't remember having seen fig trees there (but there were probably also a lot of fig trees over there).

Nice one Timo, were staying not far from Cavtat,in a village called Komaji I'll keep my eyes open for figs over there.I have an White Adriatic and a Dalmatie so it will be interesting to see if they are the same at home as they are abroad.Im also plannning to go to Mostar via Neum and Nerceg Novi in Montenegro and maybe continue up to Kotor bay depending on time.It sounds like I could be eating lots of fresh figs

If you are near Dubrovnik, you should be able to find a number of great figs of both light and dark varieties including Crnica which is a black fig several Croatian members have posted about. Fresh figs and cuttings if possible should be the order of the day for you.... There are a number of posts in this forum that you should be able to search for with long lists of figs available in the area and includes their local names and synonyms as well as localities....  Enjoy

Cheers Tony,I have been over those posts a couple of times lol,I'll definitely be taking pictures and comparing what I find against those listed. It seems there are some good figs to be had round those parts. My holiday shopping has started, some new pruners is first thing in the bag lol.

I'd love to find some fig farms or something round there to visit,I've found these. It not really sure if I am visit, google translate just didn't do the web pages justice,I know from your posts that this region is your motherland, maybe you can make more sense of them

The first link just seems to be a site to purchase dried fig products. The second site shows the Jakobusic family farm and some of the things they produce. Dried figs is one of those. Not clear whether the farm is something you can visit or just an information site that also has links to buy their products.

Wish I knew where there ere places to visit but although you will find wild and domestic figs everywhere, I am not aware of many any commercial growers and especially any open to public. That said, the local people are very friendly and many speak good english so you can always top to chat and you may find yourself staying for dinner or sharing wine and prosciutto with figs....  Enjoy!

Thanks Tony, these guys are missing a trick, they should open to the public. If we get invited for figs, prosciutto and wine I'll have to politely decline the second two as I don't partake of either, maybe they will take pity on me and load the plate with figs like folks do with veg when they find out folks are vegetarian lol.

I found this article, which although badly auto translated gives some useful information on some varieties(bifera/university and whether pollination is required) and background on figs in the region

Haroon, not to worry local hospitality extends far beyond wind/spirits or charcuterie.... the sweets and pastries run the gamut between simple and complex, rich and fattening to fresh and fruity.... you will encounter lots of what will please you...
