Figscaping - Any Photos?

  • Jed

I have about a 10 foot by 20 foot area in my back yard I am looking working on with more fig plants.

I have Mission, Brown Turkey and Negronne to work with now.

Some of my fig trees are basically small bushes under 2-3 feet tall.  Some of them, my dogs ate the tops off so were naturally pruned. Others, I am keeping about 6-7 feet so I can reach them and they will not drop figs on my roof. I am keeping them a few feet from the sides of the house.

Here I my question: Can I plant the smaller fig bushes intermingled under the taller yet still small dward size fig trees?

Does anyone have examples of how many figs you can grow in a small area? I would love to see the photos.

This are all 7gallon pots , about 300 in this bunch, very close together 2.5 / 3 feet apart. Sun all day and automatic drip sistem 1 gallon from 7:00 to 8:00 AM I'll add more if extra hot

Mario, that's amazing and really well organized.  I take it you have a large garage???

I thought the same thing Rewton. What a nice collection Mario! How tall do you allow them to get?

I would love to see a post with pictures and descriptions of your drop irrigation system someday. I'm sure I wouldnt be the only interested member ;)

Dang! WoW! Please apply all other applicable superlatives! Really nice setup! What do you do for winter storage protection? Large heated / unheated barn? I am in a 6A zone and find it a challenge to store figs, persimmon, Lemons and assorted Mandevilla's, Hibiscus, etc over the winter... Things get really tight in the garage, basement and storage rooms...  :-)

I agree, Mario. Can you do a post on your system...i mean some good detail would be excellent!

How old ate most of your trees?

Well done, Mario!  Since they look to be in framed "beds," do you erect polytunnels over them for winter protection or do you move them inside somewhere when the temps drop?  Inquiring minds want to know! LOL

I have the same questions Mario. Would be interesting to know.

As for myself, I am seeking Mediterranean climate fig landscaping ideas so I can move forward on my plants. I have another question:

What kind of understory are people using?

Very unique setup Mario. We could use lots of tips here. Is your irrigation system a custom one. Mine is a timer hooked up to a faucet. I don't think that I would be able to water 300 trees without multiple timers.
