First fruit from 2016 Rouge de Bordeaux cutting

It's really nice when you get fruit early in the life of a fig.
I know you should remove them to help the tree develop but it's too tempting not to let a few grow. This one tasted just as good as any from the mother tree.

Wow. Best looking fig I ever seen. Going to find this one.

You got this one in the States. You call it Pastilliere I think.

Oh. We do have it. Some need the wasp. Do you have the fig wasp where you live

I do not think they are the same.

At least as far as Pastillier unk and Rouge de Bourdeaux.

The Pastillier needs the wasp and I know the Rouge produces in Virginia.

Mike

A friend who has grown both told me he referred to his Rouge as the Christmas tree fig because of the different colors on the tree as it ripens.

He said it comes out as a light to medium powder blue. Is yours like this also? I know he has the (jealous) darn wasps.

Mike

There has been some discussion about whether Rouge is the same as Pastillier.
In Europe Baud has them the same in his variety description. But there are lots of variants of similar figs so the Pastillier in the States may well be a different fig. Rouge doesn't need the wasp. We haven't got the wasp in UK, too cool summers and no Capri figs. Nearest with the wasp is parts of Portugal and Spain. Rouge gives the impression of needing the wasp because of its annoying habit of dropping figs if pot grown, I don't know about in ground. But the figs are worth waiting for once it gets going.
Garlic_mike is the friend Bluemalibu? If so, seen the pictures. California and the wasp, fig heaven indeed. What more could you ask for. The colour of the fruit does vary. I will pick and photo the second and last fruit on the tree today which is a bit riper and more wrinkly than the one I started the topic with.

Picked the second fig, it was up there with any fig I have eaten this year. Leaving on the tree that bit longer pays.

@Garlic_Mike has my number...  I indeed go overboard at Christmas each year,  and I have a soft spot for any tree that self-decorates with Christmas ornaments...

Thanks Bluemalibu. Your picture showing the figs with light blue colour matches my older mother tree, pot grown, at a stage of development when some of its fruit starts dropping.

Nice fig John. Rouge de Bordeaux is the same fig sold by Baud as Pastiliere. If you got your tree from Reads nursery then Baud is their source. I had some last year but none this year. Do you grow them in the greenhouse ?

Cheers

Thanks Vinny, it was a super tasty fig.
I grow all my figs in pots in the greenhouse, though I do shuffle some stuff in and out. The greenhouse gets a bit stacked with the figs, 3 potted peaches and a couple of potted tomatoes. I don't know if you saw my post about Riverford having organic Cuella da dama Negra figs for sale. I expect you have loads of ripe figs of your own but I will be posting pictures and a review of them later today.

All the best.
