Does anyone know of a fig variety that has flat stems on the fruit? I bought an unk from a local nursery about a month ago. It was good size, loaded with figs, and the price was right. It was just labeled "Large Italian White." The nurseryman said it was locally grown by grower that I've only known to grow poinsettias, impatiens, mums and the like. I was just looking at it more closely and I realized that all the stems on all the figs have a flat profile. i.e. instead of having a round cross-section, they are very noticeably flattened. The tree looks healthy (other than yellowing leaves due to the weather turning), the figs look healthy, and the stems look healthy. It doesn't look like they're drying out or anything. Every fig from top to bottom, from the smallest to the largest, has the same shape to the stem. Does this ring a bell to anyone? Cheers, Jim

I snapped some pictures, but it is dark out and the flash wasn't coming on while I was in "macro mode", so I'll need a minute to pick and choose which ones turned out OK. In the mean time, I took some measurements. One on fig I measured that the fig stem height (top to bottom) was 7mm, while the width (side to side) was only 4mm. The other stems had that same kind of aspect ratio -- taller top-to-bottom and flatter side-to-side. Only the very smallest of them seemed to have a normal "roundish" stem to the fig fruit. Jim

I hope these pics give you a sense of what I mean. Focus and lighting is not great. In some cases the stem of the fig I was trying to get is not in focus but one in the background is. Here are some shots of individual figs: Here are some shots "pulled back" showing multiple figs: And here are some shots of the leaves. The biggest ones are dinner-plate size. They're turning yellow now that the cool weatehr is coming... Is this stem shape on the fig an aberration? Or could it be a trait of this kind of fig? Jim

I should be so lucky!! I'll have to get some better pictures of the leaf shapes and the figs. I'm not sure if any figs will ripen. I guess it would be wise for me to knock off the smallest ones... Jim

Grasa, Nope, I hadn't seen his post before you referred me to it. That's a good lead. Some of the leaves look similar. Hopefully some of my figs will swell and ripen so we can compare fruit, too. Cheers, Jim
