I just got back from a run to a couple of stores to stock up on some groceries and found a couple of treats. First, Publix had some flavored vinegars on sale that are being discontinued and then found some brebas in a heavy syrup at a Western Beef. Sorry the first pic came out a little blurry!

So when you going to have your taste test? This bottle is half gone. Not cheap, but I love this stuff!

Figaro am sorry to have to tell you, those are not brebas. In Colombia, the general word for fig, as in main crop fig, is "brevas." I have been there, and inspected the fresh ones they sell in their supermarkets. They are inedible, possibly even Caprifigs. They use them only for cooking. Caramelizing can make any fig edible. For whatever reason, their lingua franca has eliminated the correct Spanish word for main crop figs, which are supposed to be called "higos." Hence, all figs are called "brevas." They wouldn't know what to do with a fresh fig. There is, however, a Colombian fig farm on facebook.

Unfortunately, Rafael is 100% correct! I tried a couple of the "Brevas" ealier and, while the syrup was tasty, the figs were horrible. They were very dry and they were picked WAY too early since the insides were somewhat fibrous. The syrup was pretty good and seemed to be flavored with cinnamon and cardimom, which helped significantly with the dryness of the figs themselves. It'll still be good over some vanilla ice cream but, I''m sure, no where near as good as anyone on this forum would make from their own figs.
