Getting buds to pop

This Fall I cut down a number of my trees they were getting to tall and I wanted to reshape them my question is what can I do to ensure all the buds to pop out and branch out ?

I had a tree last year that I chopped the top off and it was buried in the back of my trees and I didn't pay enough attention to it and only the top bud popped and shot up to 6ft tall which I had to recut in the Fall

I've heard a couple of methods notching the bark above the bud & some hormone paste that you apply to the bud to get it to pop ?

Whats the best way to ensure that the buds that want to grow into limbs will do that?

Hi,
I don't think that there is a way, but being lucky.
You could bend the tree or put a brick under the pot for the trunk not to be up straight. This should trigger the upside buds.
You could then move the brick to trigger the buds on the other side.
Trimming the faster stems after 3 or 5 leaves is nevertheless needed to get a well balanced tree.
I had trees getting to a better shape after 3 years. Every year one or two new buds would start from the trunk ...
Good luck !

PS: why are you trimming those trees now ? Wouldn't it be wiser to wait till the beginning of March ? I'll be doing mine just after the 1st of March ...

I didn't trim them now I trimmed them when they went dormant in the Fall had no choice they were too tall for my winter storage

I found this article it is pretty interesting http://cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14243

I've read about that Bap/lanolin mix. For what it costs its worth a try.
