going to bills figs, any recommendations on what to get?

Just like the title says. going out there next week for his summer care seminar, and am planning on grabbing another tree while I am there.... I don't know what to get, but I do know I want another tree. any recommendations? Currently have a Celeste, Stella, and a Bisirri light. I was thinking maybe a Panachee? I definitely have the fig bug, I went from wanting to have a tree in May to having three trees, and two cuttings trying to be rooted from an unknown South Philadelphia tree, which seem to be making it (almost two weeks covered with bags in the shade and they put out new leaves and figlets that I had to remove.) __________________ Chris NE Philadelphia Wish list: figoin, Fico Preto, any CDD

If you are growing in pots, a VdB would be an excellent choice. Always a highly rated fig. I'll be that guy. Consider forgoing the panachee, unless you've got a green house or a sun room that the fig can get an early start in every year. Its a late ripening variety that might be tough to get max flavor out of in a short growing season. Also, humidity/rain might be a bit of a problem as well, although a few members in the south do grow it successfully. I use a lot of "mights" in there, as although I have cuttings, I've not actually ripened one myself, so don't let my word dictate your decision. Perhaps see if he's got a Marseilles Black VS? Supposed to be very hardy, and very good. You could probably plant it in ground in Philly after a couple years growth in a pot. Alternatively, make a list of every fig recommendation on here, and go buy them all, including the panachee. That's probably your best option, really :) __________________ In GA, Zone 7b/8a Wish list: more space to put in figs.

I went there not knowing as much as I do now but might later regret getting his melenzana and Black spanish. In addition to those 2 I bought what he calls "king" which other members have said is a Desert King.. I asked bill 2 times is this a desert king ? And he said no.. long story short I'll know soon. It put on an incredible amount of figs. Don't rush when you go there. He has 35$ and bigger 45$ plants. The only difference is size. The 45$ happened to be the King i picked out. Bill has been phasing out the Panachee for years. Don't grow it in the northeast unless you have a greenhouse. It won't ripen here otherwise. __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

Chris, I just got off the phone talking to Bill. He said some of the web photos of him and his pots is not correct. One picture shows the pot with 13 white 4 inch PVC circles. That picture also show 2 1.5 inch drain hole. My question to Bill was, " what did he use to secure the 1.5 inch PVC drain to the pot? Is is glue? He said, no. The picture is wrong. There should not be any PVC drain plug...just a drain hole. Using your phone, show him the picture. He also said he uses the brown pellet lime. Again, the picture of him adding the lime is not correct. One picture shows him using the white fast acting lime which is wrong! Again, show him the pictures. Years ago, I lost several trees using that fast acting lime and wanted to confirm his technique. Dennis, I have been a client of Bill's for 4 years and he always sells lime pellets, not aware of him ever using granulated lime. What he sells and what the photos show may be different, but he would not advocate lime powder or use it. This is the wrong Lime. I know because it will stay in my wife's trunk for now :) But seriously this one is the dangerous one some say... It has binding agents in it. It also is fast acting. This is the good stuff. I top dress with it. I also mix it in with my ProMix now.
