grafting tape

Hey everyone
Where are you guys sourcing your tape from in Ontario? Not having much luck with cuttings in a humidity bin so going to try wrapping them with tape and leaving them out in room temps.

I tried all kind of grafting tape. Best i ever used to date is Teflon tapefor threads. Stretch and staying on without tieing off. Test it out. The gray Teflon is the best but all of them a great.

Richie, what a great idea... I'd a neva thunk o dat.

Lol.

Fantastic idea and I dont have to even go to the store!

Cant say it doesn't work. Have many that have already taken off

You can easily find tons of grafting tape/ Parafilm on eBay, I use Parafilm, it works great!

Jveri,

I've done about 110 cuttings so far and have about half a roll left.

This is what I use, and have gone through about 2-3 rolls with all of my grafting.  Twist it and it turns into a tough stretchy "rope" to lash together pieces if you have no rubber band, and use conventionally to seal in moisture

I agree, the one Wendy linked is the best one in my book.

I have to order it from the USA (can't find it here in Europe, only the Pharmaceutical kind that i don't like) but it's worth every penny.

Everyone will have their own opinion about what is best...   that's why we have Ford and Chevy; Coke and Pepsi.

I've used all type of tapes that are out there, including Parafilm, Buddy tape, and Nesco Film which is no longer available on the market.  Hands-down, Parafilm M, the Lab-grade grafting tape, is head and shoulders above the rest in ease of use and quality.  YMMV

Hi Bluemalibu,

I wasn't totally clear in my statement. I don't like the Parafilm M Lab-grade mainly on account of the price, that i can get it over here (quite a bit more expensive for a single roll, even when you consider that it sells in 2 inches and 4 inches rolls and if you cut it in 1 inch strips that would probably come near to almost the same length of the 6 rolls box i bought)

But i'm lazy and i don't like the hassle of having to cut strips the width i want to use, every time i use it (and it limits the maximum length to 4 inches). The 1 inch rolls of the Grafting kind is just perfect and more convenient for me.
It's easier in everything i do, even wrapping fig cuttings (and i can fold one time if need more resistance in some grafting situations - beware, the extra folds i see some guys do when using Parafilm-M, may not allow the buds to break free if they are covered this way).

Also, there is a reason why, being manufactured by the same company, one is called Parafilm - Nursery Grafting Tape while the Parafilm-M is in the Laboratory section. We know sometimes this is just marketing and different presentation and it could well be, but when you look closely the product features are different. Parafilm Grafting Tape is covered with a bit of wax and Parafil-M isn't.

But as the saying goes, we are creatures of habits. Whatever works for each of us is fine. :-)

I use the 1" Parafilm and thought it's important quality is that it allows air to pass but seals moisture. I don't know if Teflon is air permeable but if it isn't and we know it works in practice then obviously it's not that important.

Another good thing about Parafilm is that buds can break thru it, not sure other tapes would allow that.

Question for Those that have used Teflon tape....can the buds break through the Teflon or do you remove it?

Have a look at the thread that I started about a month ago.  People gave great ideas.

By the way there is a business in Thedford (just went thru the town yesterday!)  that sells parafilm M.  Someone pointed out that parafilm M was better than parafilm.  Read the thread for more details.

good luck

Unfortunately the above item can't be shipped to Canada.  At least when I tried to order it (about a month ago) it wouldn't work for me.

In my experience I find buddy tape more user friendly than parafilm. I only use buddy tape now.

In my experience Buddy Tape is better if you want a stronger hold for the graft and for a longer time (i'll use others materials if i need a stronger hold but i won't use anything else to cover the buds or when i do my chip-bud grafting).
Buddy Tape will not biodegrade as quickly as Parafilm does. I really stopped using Buddy Tape when i found Parafilm.

Now i can cover my buds, protecting them from lack of moisture and they can still breathe (this will not happen with Buddy Tape) and when they are ready they can break the parafilm easily, even if i forget to watch them, unlike other materials.

I have several chip-bud grafts i did in fig trees in October. The grafts fused okay in 2-3 weeks but the buds went immediately into dormancy. The Parafilm is still in place, protecting them and with the warm of spring they will start to grow freely.
When i used Buddy Tape, i would not cover the buds or, if i do, i would have to remember to cut the tape before the warm weather.
I also had more problems of fungus developing inside the Buddy Tape while they aren't a problem with Parafilm (even with lots of moisture inside)

Without a doubt the success i am having grafting figs is due mainly to the use of Parafilm, so i can't recommend this material more to who wants to grafts figs (especially when chip-bud grafting)

Jaime, my only frustration that I experienced with the standard grade Parafilm was that its ability to stretch the proper degree during application without breaking varied so vary widely within the roll, and again from one roll to the next.

I agree entirely, Blue.

I'm on my second box of 6 rolls and, on my first box, some rolls had that problem. Some got thinner along the way and break more easily.
Fortunately, this second box seems better in that regard. Or maybe i'm just getting better at adjusting the way i stretch it :-)

Totally agree

Here is the information a fellow forum member sent me about a month ago.

I did not contact the company since by that time I had already ordered my Parafilm (not Parafilm M) from the United States.  Parafilm M is a lot more expensive than Parafilm.
