Hello from the UK

Hi All

Just thought I would introduce myself, horticulturist by trade (36 yrs).

Unbelievably I have only recently started growing figs! All in pots:

  • Desert King
  • Ice Crystal
  • Peter's Honey

Looking to increase the number of varieties over the next few years.....any suggestions most welcome.

Location wise, I live just outside of London near to Guildford, the UK climate means I am only likely to experience breba crops.

Looking to increase my knowledge of figs from you all.

Cheers

Sprout

This is truly a great place to learn.  You have a good beginning, especially the Ice Crystal.  Gorgeous leaves.

Hello, I am a newbie here too, up in Aberdeenshire, this is my first year trying figs, although I have been gardening for many years. There is certainly a lot of information on this forum that I haven't found elswhere, as well as some very friendly people.

Hi sprout, welcome, you will find a few other Brits here but the Americans really know their stuff!.The sheer amount of knowledge and experience with figs here is just awesome-literally,I am in awe about the amount of info you can find here.Yku are Definately in the right place.

In years to come would be happy to exchange with you,as I'm sure others will,to help grow collections respectively.

Also make sure you get out and about in Guilford,I'm sure you will find plenty of unknown figs fruiting well in your area to take cuttings from and try to ID,by far the cheapest way to expand a collection.

Make sure you use the search function on the forum,if the question comes to you chances are someone else has answered it before!.A good list of varieties can be found by searching for cold hardy figs list by flavour, lots of early,Breba producing cold hardy varieties on that list.

Welcome to the forum! This forum is a wealth of information, happy figging :)

 Hi Sprout,

I'm fairly new here too, also from the uk. Try acquiring a cheap greenhouse from ebay etc to get to ripen your main crop figs, it should be possible to ripen most of the varieties available in this country.

I made a proper Heath-Robinson type greenhouse cheaply and i've got some main crop ripening now :-)

Cheers
Steve
