I did it last year, planted half september and they were fine, some die back a few branches, they were a bit bigger but I have also done the same size covered well and it was fine.

They might survive but I'd wait till spring so they get a chance to develop roots for a long time before winter hits.

Thanks everyone . I brought them over to her house and we found a very sheltered area on the south side of her home . She wasn't thrilled about having them in her house for the winter - sooo gave her some instructions on covering them well and she was happier with that option. Hope they'll be ok , but I think it's so sheltered there it just might be work .

If they are currently "root bound" in 1 gallon containers, I would up pot to larger 5 gallon containers or take a chance and plant in ground now. I plan on planting (this weekend) several cultivars that are currently root bound in 1 gallon containers, they have been trained as single stem, they will be planted 2-3 feet deep (think tap root). The hole will be gradually backfilled until it is level with the surrounding soil. They will be covered this winter with straw and a tarp. The roots will have 2 or more months to grow into the surrounding soil.

Yep , thanks Pete , that's what I told her to do - they are single stem - rather thick now and root bound in the 1 gal. My 1 gals. are going to be up potted to 5 gal's this week. I plan on putting them in the garage with the rest of the "pack" for winter .
