Hi everyone, new to the forums.  I am trying to propagate cuttings from my cousin in Brooklyn's tree.  The tree has been in my family for yrs.  I believe it came from Italy.  Can you help ID the cuttings?  Also any advice on how the cuttings look?  I started them around November, 2013.  I have them under a grow light for 6-8 hrs a day.
Thanks!
Anthony

It's never that simple to ID a fig tree just by looking at a cutting or a leave. Both the leaves and the fruit might help narrow down the variety but it's never a sure thing.
There are over 700 varieties of figs and mutations are occurring all the time. Sometimes the same variety might yield a different looking fruit under different conditions.

If your cuttings are pushing new growth by now then most will do well. You might still lose a couple. Just watch your moisture and do not over water.

I just remembered. When the time comes and you start transferring those cuttings to a larger container, make sure that you do not disturb the roots during the growing season.

Welcome to the Forum!

Welcome! Do u have any pictures of the leaves and fruit from the mother tree?

Also, yiur cuttings should have good roots and leaves by now. Grow lights should be on 12 -14 hrs per day.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome and great advice.  I will take a photo of the mother tree this summer when it comes back to life.

Finally got a couple of pics from the mother trees in Brooklyn.  Anyone want to give a shot identifying them?

Mother tree - White:

Mother tree red.  My cousin called this one red, although I thought it was purple:

Update on my cuttings: I messed up my labels over the winter and am not sure which is which at this point.  I believe trees 1 and 3 below are red/purple and tree 2 is white.  All 3 have grown to 4+ feet with many figs.  Pictures of my trees below. Please pardon the drooping leaves, they tend to do this during the afternoon.  They perk up at night.

Tree 1:

Tree 2 (I think this one is white)

Bonus pic, Hardy Chicago from Bills Figs on the left (bought last yr), with my 3 Brooklyn trees, 1-3, left to right.  The HC is loaded with figs, probably 45 or so.

I also wanted to point out the growth habit of the figs on tree 2. They look to be attached with a much longer stem then my HC. Any guesses?

After a long year and a half, I finally got to enjoy one of my family's white figs. I attached a couple of pictures of the leaf patterns as well as the white fig next to a Hardy Chicago along with both cut open. The white was just as delicious as I remember. Slight "fuzzy" outside, thicker skin than the HC and a watermelon/ slight strawberry taste.
Any guesses what it could be?

It looks nice and it is growing well for you.   Enjoy it.
Eventually you will find out what kind of fig it is and what other figs are similar.
If you can find out where the fig is from that may help.   If from Italy you need to narrow it down to region or town.
Good luck.

The white fig is Sicilian white, and it had good climatic conditions to ripe this year but ,if it was ,ripening in 2013 or earlier going back to 2010,it would have been souring ,badly as it does not like rain while ripening.
I had it but discarded, for souring during rain.

Thanks for the ID. I've cut back on the watering once the figs started to swell.

Yes,You see ,the fig is perfect, and delicious in Sicily, because there is sunny and dry in July Aug., and September, but here in NJ,is a different story.
WE had 20 inches of rain In Aug 2013 ,or 2012,i am not sure which one,but any way.
More then Sicily have in one year.

I am in NJ too. I have mine in a pot kind of under my garage soffit which shields the tree a bit from heavy rain.

I see you are in Basking Ridge? Im originally from Union, not too far from you, but now I live in Plainfield Twp. In Northeastern PA.. Maybe 40-50 miles from Basking Ridge I'm guessing.. Would definitely love to do some trades, or buy some from ya, so keep me in mind when the time comes.. Ive got Strawberry Verte, Black Marseilles, Celeste, CH, VdB, and CddN (although the CddN is growing from cuttings right now themselves) So let me know :)

Yeah, border of Basking Ridge and Bedminster. I should have cuttings in the fall. Have to figure out how much I need to cut them back.
