Help with rooting green cutting

Just need some help. I have a green cutting the is about 5". Do I start it in a glass of water, potting soil or in peat Miss? I will take any and all help. I really want this to take off

No doubt others will respond with their preferred methods, but I have the most success with some sort of potting soil in a clear plastic cup, so that I can see roots developing, and placing   the the whole thing in a gallon sized zip lock bag. Make sure that the mix is just damp, and not too wet. If there are leaves on the cutting, remove all but the top one and place under a light source. If there are no leaves, no need to worry about light until a bud begins to swell. The soil mix I prefer is Miracle Grow Cactus and Citrus Mix,but other mixes work just as well,as long as they are loose and drain well. Don't forget to make drainage holes in the cup,and open the bag for a while every 2 or 3 days to let fresh air in. Good luck!

Thanks I just have the one, so it is golden.

Hi Mars,

I would put the cutting directly into water when cut. Change the water every two days, and keep there for 7-10 days. Then plant in soil and keep moist. Rooting compound is a plus if you have it. Green cuttings can sprout quick, but die even faster. I have had them wilt and was sure they were dead, and they turned into nice plants.

There was a recent post about a cutting growing after a year of so. It inspired my determination and I may be rewarded with tres num plato, lampiera preta, fico presca d or, and a couple others I would have gave up on by now, 5 months plus.

You should do OK

Good luck, Mike.

Green cuttings are my nemesis. I've tried everything trust me.

I think that the key to success with green cuttings is controlling the humidity level; too much causes rot,and not enough naturally causes them to shrivel and die. There should be some condensation in the enclosure, but opening the enclosure as I described allows some of this to evaporate and prevents mold from growing. Using the method I described has worked very well for me to the extent that I find green cuttings easier than dormant ones.

Every once in awhile I break off a branch by accident so I just stick it in the ground. Am 2 for 2 so far this year. :).
