My name is Angela. I'm happy to be a part of this group. I'm excited to get started and become a great Figster. I own a garden center here in Arkansas and have been propagating plants for years . I've been experimenting with figs this year and boy do I have to say I'm happy to have found this group. Im use to propagating shrubs and trees off new growth in the spring . I tried this with some Brown Turkey this spring in my cold frame . It wasn't a complete failure but starting them when their more dormant seems to be the way to go about it. I can't wait to build up a great fig collection . If you have any extra cuttings you would be willing to share I sure will appreciate it. I don't have much of what would call a fig collection now but would be happy to share other fruit tree and berry cuttings I have. Thanks everyone !

Welcome Angela! What part of the AR (zone) are you from? Given a choice I would rather have a fig cutting from new growth than a dormant cutting anytime. Green cuttings do not ship well so one needs a close by source. I start my green cuttings in 50% Ultimate Potting Mix and 50% perlite, in trade gallons covered with a one gallon ziplock bag. Remove all but the last few leaves and cut away 3/4 of those leaves. Do all of this within two minutes of taking the cutting. Place a support (stick) in the pot to support the ziplock. Put the pot under a Magnolia tree and walk away. Check in a few weeks. This method is nearly 100% when done correctly. Hey, Frank. I'm zone 7. I have triple Crown thornless blackberries, Darrow blackberries, Premier rabbit-eye southern high bush blueberries, Tiff blue blueberry also southern high bush rabbit-eye, native mulberry , few everbearing Ozark Beauty strawberries and will be getting many more items in spring such as grapes, Muscadines , elderberry and more. I try and propagate or buy as local as possible so the plants are acclimated to the temps here(zone) . If interested in anything let me know. I'm always up for horse trading plants /cuttings. Thanks !

Welcome again Angela, you will find this is a great forum, always someone to help you when in need, or just talk about figs and other subjects. I root dormant and green cuttings and have really good luck with both, although I had a miserable first year and with the help of Frank (FMD) I found this forum. I think the main thing is to keep your medium(whatever you use) warm. I root everything in one gallon pots using mostly pine bark fines, peat, compost, and perlite. Most members do not use this method, but I live in sunny Florida and root all year long, outside. Last Dec and Jan, I successfully rooted CdD Noir, Kathleen Black, Ronde, and Violet Sollies outside even with some cold days(brrrrr 40deg at night only 60deg daytime), but most days were in the 55-80 range. I think the sun on black pots keeps the roots warm and the cool air slows the leaf growth. The good thing about this forum is that you will get a lot of ideas. So good luck and good growing.

I'm zone 7a . I've been born in raised in the plant nursery busy. My parents were in the business for 40+ plus years. I opened my business about 9 years ago. I was in charge of the propagation for my parents nursery for years. I've been propagating more and more for my own business every year. I start a lot of my own veggies, herbs, shrubs , trees, perennials and annuals from seed or cuttings. I also sale fruit trees and name it with berry bushes . I know it's a fig forum but if anyone has in questions about other plants I'll do what I can to help.

Hi Angela, I am just north of you near Springfield Mo (zone 6a), and figs are not seen around here. I wish you luck with getting figs that are hearty for our area so more folk will get involved growing this wonderful fruit.
