How do you rate Violette de Solies.

I grafted 2 V.d.S to a Chicago Hardy and one to a unknown hardy fig, they are both doing excellent and are about 50" tall. Just like to know how they stack-up. Hopefully be able to get them to grow to 6 feet and still be able to harden-off before late fall.

VdS is absolutely excellent. It is a little on the late side in the mid Atlantic, (mid September), but is reminiscent of Maltese beauty meets black Madeira.

2 weeks ago, my friend Dan and I went to visit Harvey C. We toured his orchard of over 300 fig varieties, tasting as we walked. Only sampled 40 or 50 different ones, and Violette de Sollies was a standout. Along with Col de Dame Noir and Figo Preto/Black Madeira, they were the memorable figs that day.

VdS is a very powerful grower and her cuttings turns into big plants fast! I have one in ground and 5 in pots. Love um!  :)

VdS = Bourjassotte Noire, right?  or was I told some misinformation?

Hi,
VDS is a bourjassotte noire ripening 2 weeks earlier - Information from growers in Solliès.
Keep us posted on the fruits. If they do ripen in your locales .
Bourjassotte noire is a big tree "not suited for small gardens".
There is a video on the u-tube about that fig -in French bien sur !
Nice growth. You should probably consider making it branch out.

Boy, that is good news, hoping it would be a decent one. I got sions last winter from a oldtimer and good forum friend that gave me Black Madeira cuttings. Try to root them but no luck. B/M did not survive. Now i have to look for a B/M k.k to graft and not root. Looks like i have to find a variety close to that and be happy.
