I would like to take cuttings from my fig trees and then try to root them. I've done this before with other plants. How do I do it with figs? Is there anything special that I should do? With other plants I just stick them in potting soil and not cover them in plastic.

Cynthia there are some really good threads on rooting cuttings, try using the search function.  One of the good ones is Doug's 3 cup method.  You generally have to protect the exposed part of the cutting to prevent dehydration.

Check out air layering, there is a recent post about this on the front page right now.  If you have to take cuttings use the search feature as recommended.  There are some great people up here with TONS of experience and have done all types of experiments.  Very awesome information in the database on this forum, without a doubt.

If you've rooted other things, figs may seem easy.  Unlike other types of cuttings, they really don't need hormone.  The simplest is to bury them in some coco coir that's very slightly damp, in a plastic shoebox, and close the lid and check once a week.

I would air layer if they are still attach to the tree. If they are already cut place them in a humidity bin with coconut coir. Just search cuttings there are so many previous threads on this subject.

This is the method I've used with much success:

Harvey, that is exactly the method I use with a few possible modifications. You don't really talk much about after the planting. I keep the cutting in the dark until I see any green growth. Then I put it in full sun. This slows the growth of leaves and there doesn't seem to be a hardening off period any longer.  

Cynthia24, here is how I did it. I used Doug's 3 cup method. It is my first effort and it is exactly 1 month since I started my cuttings.
