Last week Hurricane Irma hit the Carribean Islands and Puerto Rico was on her way. It was a monster cattegory 5 hurricane with 185 mph winds. I have entered some of my smallest bonsai to the house and I tought about saving two fig varieties in case this became a big disaster. My choices were:
1. Black Madeira
2. Galicia Negra

It was a tough choice to make, but I pick them because I've been after them for some time and I finally have them and they are growing very nice. I left some other good choices out like Cdd B, Cdd B-N, Cdd Roja, Figo Preto, Panache, RdB...

So which two varieties would you save and why?

Note: we were very fortunate that at last moment Hurricane Irma went up and north and we only were hit by tropical storm winds like 50 to 60 mph. I didn't lost any fig tree or any other tree.

Maybe its emotion talking, but I would first make sure my family was safe, then I would take one of every cultivar, 80% or more I would take...they are valuable plant genetic material, and I would only leave behind the least productive-tasty.

Obviously this would take too much time. So you make your preperations accordingly. ;)

If they are potted trees, I'd save them all. I'd put them inside and I'd pile them flat instead of keeping them up side up if need be.
I'd arrange something in front of the pile to pile in height or if you have a garage, I'd put them next to the car in the garage.
And even in the car's back, and in the car trunk.
Now if the trees are in ground, you could try and take cuttings for in case the trees getting completely shredded .
Good luck and stay safe! Even with strong winds only, one could have serious damages and problems !
