Is Fall Gold(Alma) & Falls Gold The Same

Can anyone growing both this named variant or have knowledge on both this variant confirm they are actually different variants. I have Falls Gold in its 2nd year. If they are different I may like to add Fall Gold  to my want list.

I have Falls Gold and Alma. Do not have Fall Gold. Falls Gold and Alma are similar, but don't think they are the same. Igo and Ventura RW are also quite similar, and possibly the same as Falls Gold, but not Alma. I would say, if space is an issue, any one of them would suffice for this flavor type, though Alma has a much lighter crop, here. Leaves are all similar, as well. They are a group of varieties that I would be willing to surmise are all the same thing, and the differences are just soil, fertilizer, etc. After this season, even more than previous ones, looking at the color and flavor changes in many figs, I am considering the idea that there are maybe a dozen fig varieties and everything else is environment. When red berry flavored figs can be honey colored on e season and honey flavored another season, or part of the season, it becomes really, really hard to say what the true description of a fig is. Even if you go with the predominant/most frequent type, that may still not be the true fig, but only a reflection of the dominant environment that it is in.

Very good Jon. Thanks. This fig hobby is sure interesting like CSI.

It will be like CSI when fingerprint samples start changing pattern from year to year. If your fingerprints changed every year, then criminal investigation would be about as accurate as fig identification is now.

I know this is an old thread but I'm bumping it because I received cuttings of both Alma and Falls gold in an exchange this season from a member here in the Uk,who received his from another member....

I have both rooting at the moment and have found them to be quite different already, although I expect some difference due to being from different mother trees they have differed in
Leaf shape
Stem thickness
Speed of growth
Ease of rooting
Root thickness/behaviour
Success rate
Signs of FMV

All in all, they so far seem very different so far even at this early stage..Is anyone else growing both of these side by side able to comment?,Alma and Falls Gold are reported as being similar and although there is lots of info out there on Alma there is next to nothing I can find about Falls Gold, anyone know where it came from?,who traded it into general circulation?

I don't think they’re the same. My Alma from Rolling River Nursery is around three years old and my two Falls Gold from Harvey are in their first year. The Alma has a few whole branches that are single lobed leaves. The rest have three lobed leaves identical to all the leaves on both my Falls Golds. Alma’s figs were small, somewhat sweet and not that memorable. Hopefully Falls Gold will be bigger and better.

I tried to upload a picture of the three trees side by side but it says something about storage exceeded. Sorry.

Thanks Mara, I think the sites picture storage is full, you would need to use a hosting site and post the links(photo bucket etc). I suspect they are similar based on what folks are saying, the Falls Gold cuttings are showing typical signs of FMV(leaf malformation) but not too extreme, doesn't seem to have affected the growth,4/4 rooting within 2 weeks, and grows very fast but leggy, leaves before roots. The alma is 2/3 on rooting, took about a month to grow anything, balanced between roots and leaves, more robust stems,no visible signs of FMV,I'll post some pics when I work it out too, there's very little out there about Falls Gold.

I did find some extra info here:

Thanks Haroon for the links. I remember reading these and deciding I had to grow Falls Gold.

Pitangadiego had posted: "The last interesting fig was Falls Gold, which is a very agressive grower, and has a nice full, kind of nutty flavor, but if you let it get fully ripe, is so sweet that it will explode your head. The sweetness keeps building like the hotness in Jalapeno peppers."

Also: "Falls Gold -I got it from a fellow in the South, who was Indian or Pakistani, if I remember correctly. He had a lot of figs, and sent me about a dozen or so. He supposedly got it from the "Bill Fogerty" collection, but have no info about that collection. I have a few which turned out not to be what they were supposed to be. The problem is, they are really great figs, but for now are unknowns. However I don't care what the name is, if it is a superior fig." http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/1893221/8-31-harvest-small-pix

Thanks for that Mara, ran out of time myself to post the quotes, family stuf so thanks for elaboratingf. It does sound like a good fig, will be interesting to see how it performs here.

here's pics of my Falls Gold(hope this works)approx 1 month old:

Compared to Alma(see below) falls gold has completely put Alma to shame, they were all put in the humidity bin at the same time,Alma only just came out,Falls gold came out within 2 weeks.
