25 degrees here in Albuquerque

I am sure glad its rainning here in coastal British Columbia. That said, normally we have at least one or two more artic outflows
before warmer spring season arrives. Temp for the week have been hovering around 48*F for day and nights at 32*F. So far
fig trees in the garage are  looking good and in the patio room, almost all are pushing figlets. These figlets will be removed.

George I agree with you 100% after the amount of work it was to store 100+ plants I can honestly tell you a 1/4 of them will be finding new homes this fall Quality is more important than quantity for me atleast.

very nice Bass, I have read many places that greenhouses are very therapeutic.  You should take a daily nap in there, set yourself up a little cot and take a snooze.  That would be awesome.

My greenhouse is more like a glassed cold storage area for fig trees right now that smells like moth balls.  Not very soothing, but protective nonetheless.

 And yes, I am fricken sick of winter.  The highs have been about 3-5 degrees colder than the norm every day for the past 3-4 weeks and the lows have taken your breath away.  No break whatsoever.  Im hearing that it will get back to normal  -4 to 1*C this coming week.  Its been brutal.  Very cold and no sun.  Wow

That's what I'm going for Bass. How cool it would be to have a haven like that for your trees.

BTW you had us beat with your recent 2F. Not by much though. Our lowest so far was one night last month @ 3F. Night before last our low was 8F with about 2 inches of snow on the ground.

Can't wait for warmer weather so I can uncover my trees & stand 'em back up.

Jon the amazing thing is my brothers and I all moved away to colder places...besides the Fairbanks brother we are in Sunset Zone 2A, 3A and 10....but we go home frequently.

The temperature dropped to 29.1 F last night!  That is frigid and brutal!   It was even colder than that earlier this month with a low of 24.9F which is the low for this winter so far.

Now if temperatures in the 20s feel frigid I can only imagine how -25 F must feel!  

I think my fig tree is OK and do not notice any die back.

-27 farenheit in Toronto right now. Oh I hope those figs in the garage survive.

I have a space heater on in the garage at full capacity and the temperature inside has dropped to -5.5C (22F) already and steadily dropping. I added a few extra incandescent light bulbs since I do not have another space heater.
What if it gets to -10C (14F) inside the garage by the morning while outside it will be -30C ( -22F) before it starts reversing outside to a high of -19C tomorrow?
If they make it this year then next year they will have a good enclosure inside the garage which I promise them if they hang on to their lives this week. I also promise them good fertilizer and sunshine this coming summer.

It is still better than -35C ( -31F) that we can once every few years.

The temperature is -27 F already?  Those temperatures can kill a lot more than just fig trees.  Very cold temperatures are very bad for the heart and can trigger a fatal stroke or heart attack.  Ever feel heart pain in cold weather?   This is a sign your heart is not getting enough oxygen due to constricted blood vessels.  The blood pressure increases and the blood thickens and causes poor blood circulation.  This is especially dangerous for people with high blood sugar(diabetics) and those with heart disease!  The combination of poor diet and cold is why heart disease is so common in North America.  Also, the majority of fatal heart attacks occur between November and March. 

NEVER exercise in extreme cold or you may suffer heart damage that could lead to fatal heart attack. 

Extreme cold kills twice as many people as extreme heat.  It is very very dangerous, be careful out there!  

Left the real cold years ago.... now the occasional low in the 40's has me running for the jacket.
I love South Florida weather, we had some 80's this past week and my orchids enjoy it as well, a few of my figs and all my desert roses and pachypodiums are trying to catch some zzzzz's, but the rest of the yard is alive and kicking. Just finished landscaping the island in front of the house and noticed a few orchids blooming, hope you guys don't mind a couple of pics...

JCA--I think at -25, you'd not feel very much at all.....

I think you must have to wear something to cover your whole face-nose and mouth especially, in frigid temps.

Start up your car and run it for a little while. The heat from the exhaust will give you a nice boost. in temp.

hahaha Noss you are absolutely right it was -10 and felt like -27 farenheit with the windchill it was absolutely freezing there is no way of getting used to these temps even after living here for 20 years. You definately have to wear a few layers of clothes. I must say I am happy that I did all the extra work in insulating the garage temps inside garage were 20 farenheit.

Jon, there was no space for the car in the garage so I did the next best thing I could do. I plugged in my 10 hp snowblower which has a kind of block heater but it did not help much since the inside temperature went down to -7.5 C (+18.5F) for a few hours when outside reached down to true -30C/ -22 F (no windchill effect) . Now it is -6.7C (19F) inside and gradually going up.

If you had a gas drier in the garage, the exhaust air from that would also provide some nice heat.

Coldest this season in garage i saw was around 15 to 18 and now in low 20s in garage i dont look at it much anymore.
Hope your "Ne " is doing ok .   ; )

We have been in  the high 70s for a couple weeks. Most of the figs are waking up and showing leaves.

The worst part of the forecast is they are calling for some power outages. It looks like the storm from Nov. 30- Dec. 1, 2006. I'm so glad you guys say to wait to start my cutting. I would be hard press to keeping it warm without power. It was 53 degrees in the house during that outage in 2006. I made sure all the flashlights have new batteries. I drug up candles and hurricane lamps from the basement.

So we got 1/2" of freezing rain. More than 3" of sleet. Snow is still coming down. But it is not going to be more than 2".  I'd trade 20" of snow for what I got. I'm having to chop every inch that I had to shovel. The sleet is like concrete. With the figs in the garage, I could not open the garage door. And I could not open the back door with all the sleet. I ended up carrying a bag of salt through the house. 

Revised: The driveway was 8" thick at the end were they plowed. The blocks was a most solid weighing 30lbs.  all to get the car out of the driveway. Fun.
