Ital-258 08/20/17

Beautiful, Leon, and I totally agree. Do you also have Genovese Nero? If so, do you see any similarity to Italian 258?

Oh my Leon those look amazing.  Makes me want to reach for the raw cheese and serrano ham.  Yummy!

Gary,
I see a lot of similarities between the Genovese Nero (AF) and Italian 258. The leaves and the fruit are almost identical. Perhaps they are sports of the same variety.

Agree. Think they are the same too or very close

Beauties....

Congratulations Leon
These are great, fine dark figs !
Some day I shall grow a few on my back yard.

Francisco

Hi Leon.
They look delicious, enjoy them my friend, I'm still waiting for mine to ripen.

Beautiful pictures, Leon.  It's a great time for fig growers.

They look awesome!!

Thank you for the kind words.
Vito, you are in for a tasty surprise!

Look great, Leon!
Do they split when the days are humid?

Beautiful inside and out. I know they must taste as good as they look..

Hi Leon. As far as the striking similarity between the Italian 258 and Genovese Nero AF, I have been seeing it as well. One theory I have, is that when Todd Kennedy gathered the best of what he could find in Italy, and then lost, or mixed up the name tags, it seems possible to me that Genovese Nero was one of the varieties he obtained. Maybe it is Italian 258. It probably never can be proven, but I think that it is possible.

Leon,
is tree in-ground? age of the tree? thanks

I have both figs but no figs yet.  Hope they look like your fig when they ripen Leon!

As I recall the story of Italian 258 came from Italy as stated above.
Harvey C through a chestnut group knew Giorgio Grasi who originally found the fig and was trying to contact him to get insights into the original name and location. Never heard back from Harvey whether he was successful in contacting or whether any new information was found.

Genovese Nero from Adriano collected from a separate but also Italian source.  So it would be a huge coincidence if i258 is the same fig.  Pretty sure no one will mind having a duplicate in this case.

Pino, Adriano did not name that fig Genovese Nero it was given to him as Genovese Nero from the original source an
Italian gentleman named Tony who also lives in Oakville,Ontario and is very knowledgeable with figs and other fruits in general.

Nelson

Nelson,
Thank you its nice to know the origins of great figs.

No Problem Pino.

Leon sorry didn't mean to change subjects on your post your ital258 look excellent. It was actually your previous pictures that you've posted its been on my wishlist for years and hopefully soon I will have it. It does however resemble Genovese Nero.

Nelson

No worries Nelson. Thank you for the history of the Genovese Nero. Is Tony still growing GN?

Nick, my current tree is in a large container.
