John's Market Capri

I've been eyeing this tree for several years now, but figs on it were always at the top branches and I was too embarrassed to climb or pull a branch down to take a fig or two, so eventually I gave up.
This year, in January I was coming out of the market and it was dark, I suddenly came out of my car and went to the tree and cut a dormant branch and threw it on the passenger front sit... the cuttings have shown some growth...

So, last night I was passing by through the market area and decided to check upon the tree...and got some samples...here they are bellow.
ok, I have to worn you... there are a lot of pictures down there, LOL
I have never seen such thing in my life, that's why I am sharing this with all of you...enjoy.

For some reason my cat JazzzPurr is always attracted to fig leaf smell...and they don't smell like cat pee at all ;)

Holy Aaron , that's some huge leaves !! Pretty leaves- nice fingers. Be interesting to see a really ripe fig. Keep us updated on your find !! Maybe someone will have the name of it for you.

Pattee it seems to be a Capri (male) fig tree. You will see some wasps in the cut flower.

Aaron's Jumbo might have some good genes to pass on.  Are you interested in finding out if it's persistent?   ;)

Of course I don't know what a female Smyrna looks like when cut open early.  Then again this is awfully large for an early Smyrna.

I missed the wasps and your statement of wasps present  !

Bob, from what I am learning regarding Capri figs...the male flowers are really pronounced and visible at Osiole level from inside the fig...this is seen in this particular ones as well ( a clear indication that this can be a Capri).
Am I right?
BTW, how can I find out if it's a Persistent type?

Aaron, you live where they are, I don't.  You have much more real life experience than I do.  I only see tiny photos.  As far as how to tell if it's a persistent caprifig, see Harvey's post, here

http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1282793236&postcount=42  It's the very young profichi crop you have to bag

You'll recognize the thread  :)

oh yes, thanks Bob.

Aaron, Love the leaves. They are HUGE! Nice find!

Fellows, .. Aaron, another one !?

Yes,  this fig seems to be a good Profichi about to hatch many insects.
A few may have already done so!

Looking at picture nr 6 , counting from the top...
The eye of this fig is no longer closed, it shows now the typical orifice sufficiently large and cut from the inside out by the male wasps to help the ladies to move out
There are still plenty of not yet fully open galls, meaning this,  that many  wasps still through the hatching process, others may have already left through the ostiole

Pics 8 and 9 show the male flower 'forest' just under the eye, inside the fig, being worked out, first by the males to excavate and soften the male flowers for the passing wasps, then by the flow of insects leaving the fig...

As for persistence, and according to the fresh definitions it does not seem to be one such fig 'cause.

1- Being the receptacle (synconium) full of loaded gall flowers, this means that back in March, the previous Mamme wasps have entered this Profichi and laid hundreds of eggs inside those young galls

2- By definition, and if I understood it correctly,  a Persistent Caprifig will ripe by now and with no wasps at all - just male flowers full of fertile pollen

Francisco

Francisco, once again, thank you for shedding some light into this very interesting subject...I'm happy to supply and share :)
Thanks for your help.

Nice find, those are some huge leaves!

Sue, I'm going to get more pictures of the tree to share...you are right , very attractive.

Thanks Harvey, Ideal size leaves for baby diapers. LOL
But seriously speaking, I think this is an exceptional Capri fig...

Now what should we do about this...hm.

I have a suggestion, if I may.
Snip and share, Aaron. I, for one, would gladly adopt a fig with such intriguing leaves.
I'd pull up on another winter night, driving a bigger car...and...oops, a couple of big branches fell off the tree and onto my roof rack!

I'm with Ruuting.  I would love this for the leaves alone.

LOL, you guys are trying to get me arrested!

OK, Just to be clear here, you guys know this is a Capri fig , right? (Ruuting, schaplin)

Uh yes and it doesn't matter since the leaves are really cool and I would grow it for the leaves alone.  I'm not suggesting you trim someones tree in the middle of the night though.  Also I've recently been contacted to help provide plant material for a new greenhouse at a University.  One of the key interests is insect pollination so I could most likely give the some of the figs to the University for classes.

I would grow it for the leaves, and for a little pollination experiment that I'll be running in the future.

ok, sounds good. As long as you both know it's capri, I just don't want you to be disappointed later :)

I'll write your names and who ever else wants cuttings and when the time comes for the cuttings to be taken I'll let you all know, sounds good? :)

That would be wonderful

I stopped by , again, at the mother tree and took few more pictures.
Also, I discovered that some one had been there before me and left foot trail at the bottom of the tree, plus the rest of the Huge Capri Figs were no longer there. All there were was the smaller, next generation Capri figs...so I took pictures and here they are.
BTW, I might have a clue who visited that tree before me, LOL
This is the branch I took the leaves from

Look what's hiding on the left side of the fig on this last picture...  20140521_214614.jpg

I can't see anything

it's very illusive, even BIGGER FIG, and by BIG i mean bigger than my fist, lol

That is pretty fantastic! If you have enough I would be willing to trade for some cuttings. I just got my caprifig from Harvey with loaded profichi so by next year I could possibly have another tree for the figs to settle in.

It really is a beautiful tree Aaron, very nice find!

Aaron,
That wasn't me who visited the tree for sure! I am busy with a baby, no time for a long distance travel for the next year :)
Well, except the Fig Fiesta!
