Jon's available cuttings (from Sue)

Here are the links to my web pages for the Madeira figs and the Saratoga (Chico Strawberry) Jon is offering on his site: http://encantofarms.com/Available_Cuttings_2010.html.

These are great figs and may not be available again for a few years. The owner of the Madeira figs is elderly and has a heart condition. Who ever inherits the home may not be open to our 'help' in pruning in the future. So get them while they are available or plan to wait a few years for our trees to mature.

Chico Strawberry C-3005:
http://www.susanvanderveen.com/FIGS/ChicoStrawberry/Saratoga.html

Sweet, peachy taste. Yellow/green fig with pink-red pulp. Pretty red ostiole, open eye. Main crop only. Picked figs into Nov.

Abebereria C-3001 (from the island of Madeira)
http://www.susanvanderveen.com/FIGS/Bebereria/Abebereria.html

Long black fig, a favorite in Portugal, red pulp. 2 crops.

Branca C-3002 (figo Branca from the island of Madeira)
http://www.susanvanderveen.com/FIGS/Branca/Branca.html

Very large breba, green fig with reddish pulp. Sweet, closed eye. Prolific.

Preto C-3003 (figo Preto from the island of Madeira)

http://www.susanvanderveen.com/FIGS/Preto/Preto.html

May be what we call the Black Madeira. The tree characteristics are exact to Jon's Black Madeira (leaf shape, fruit color and size, main crop only) except this tree fruits earlier by a couple weeks or more. This may be due to the age of the tree (50+)? Prolific.

Martin

Hi Martin,
Jon has them available for sale on his site. He just referenced my web site for pictures. I didn't want these to be overlooked so I posted the direct links. These are not my trees but trees I found while 'crusin' Point Loma, a local heavily Portuguese community. I was out looking for ethnic Portuguese figs and found these. Please contact Jon about availability.
Thanks,
Sue

I understand now Sue thanks for the reply.
I already placed my order i had thought these were something that were slighty different. Perhaps next season as the one i have is from a forum member who obtained them from UcDavis and i wanted to compare them side by side.
Thanks once again.

Man I always luck out, there's no way I could get some now until I get setteled down in japan.

Sue those three trees are beautiful I think its great what you have done making these three varieties from Madeira available to the fig forum. The Abebereira is definately a favorite in The Island if anyone ever goes to madeira and wants to find one of these fig trees you always ask for an Abebereira or Bêbera.

The locals in Madeira have a saying it goes like this an Abebereira produces Bêberas & a Figueira " Portuguese word for fig tree " Produces figs. They consider figs round and Bêberas Long and considering its the only long Black fig in the island you cant confuse it with anything else.

Omg Nelson, I just saw your R.I.P. Champ on your picture of the dog, what happened, did you loose him!!! If so, I am so sorry!!!  OUr dogs are like our other children, I would really go to war for our babies, I am so sorry if you lost your dog.

Thank you Maggies ,yes I lost my dear Champ this year he was the best friend I ever had besides my mom ofcourse. I still have a hard time going to my parents and not seing him there, He died of cancerous tumors we were told 10 years ago he would live very long but vets were very wrong he lived a happy life and is missed dearly. My mom still cries every day

I am soooo sorry NElson, I feel your pain, this is very very hard, I told husband I do not look forward to the end of our babies, they are our best friends definitely, God Bless good luck and sorry, Console Mamma. Now I guess I need to stop robbing Sue's thread.
Sorry Sue, but had to give Nelson my condolonces.

Which one is the fig with the really funky trunk (one of the trunks on the trees looks all lumpy and cool)?.

I still haven't put in my request yet (this has been one of the busiest two weeks so far this year for me) but I am hoping tonght I'll get it in.

Chills I believe that tree your talking about with the bumps is the Preto.

You are right, it is the Preto.
When we were pruning it Jon mentioned the tree had grown over areas where lower branches had been removed in previous years. Makes sense. Tree sure is healthy otherwise.
