Kadota

I picked a little early, need more time, 1 to3 days. It was a little sweet, all jam like. The skin on the bottom could be eaten, the top for get about it, to thick. Do not know if it is a keeper yet!!

i agree. mere sweetness isn't enow when you can find really interesting flavors.

I have been eating store bought Kadotas and Black Missions.

They're alright, but you know?  They are just not very top fruits, particularly the Kadotas.  There are plenty of things that gives very sweet fruit, with much more flavor, like sapodillas, or muscadine grapes, or even the small dogwood fruits!

Now, I also managed to pick a barely mature Petite Negri or two today.  Those things frickin' blows that supersweet stuff away, goodness gracious, but that's a top fruit!

With little room I need to pick good ones 

  I must say Kadotas are great for canning whole. The skin holds their shape and texture nicely. Open a jar of whole Kadotas during winter and dream of next summer's figs,  and you'll see what I mean.

SoniSoni  That sounds good. How do you go about canning Kadota figs?

Mine haven't started to swell yet hopefully soon.  I have not eaten any of them yet.  If they are not good maybe I can try canning them and try that.

This year Kadota is one of my best yellow figs, behind Peter's Honey.  I won't say the skin is tough, I call it tight!  It does have a very strong honey flavor.  I gave some to my friend, Irene and she loves them!

I do like the texture of the skin.  And the syrup quality of the honey inside.  Just wish the flavor wasn't so blah.

I guess it depends on the tree and the factors sun water and soil......Have been getting some real good and sweet Kadotas....
Stores may be bringing unripe figs for their customers......I know I am lucky to be in California and get them and other varieties
fresh......I like Panache overall....then Black Mission.

The first year my Kadota fruited was a hot dry summer and the figs were excellent and full of flavor not just sweetness .
However since then summers have not been as dry or hot and the fruit is bland and if it's raining then they suck up water like a sponge .
So it's a great fig if it has great weather , otherwise don't bother .
Peters Honey is in the same family but more forgiving .

Kadota has been wonderfully honey sweet this year. This is my hubby's favorite this year.

I have to agree with Pattee about Kadota, this year it has been a 10+.
Almost tennis size figs with multiple drops of honey hoozing onto it's chin.
Thanks to lack of rain, mature trees, like 8 to 10 years. The plus is for it's
history, that to me equals to a keeper in Southern N.J. Sergio.

one of the best yellow figs! although i would love to taste LSU gold and peters honey.

I believe this is a Kadota. Has a big cluster of figs. It's been oozing honey for the past few days.
My question is: When it's fully ripe will they get soft and hang like the others? There's no neck and the skin feels very tough.

when they sag they are heaven, just get them before birds do..

Art , it looks like my Kadota. Mine did not hang when fully ripe and there is no neck and has the clusters and drop of honey at the eye. I had to cut the ripe ones off with nippers . The skin was tougher than Sal's C for sure . The only inedible, tough part we found was at the "neck". Inside more than made up for the thicker skin as it was very creamy, sweet and honey tasting.  

Pat, Did you let it get really soft? I'm wondering if I should pick one of these. I don't think this variety will shrivel up.

They look about right now. I let a few "sugar spots " form and then cut them off . I have them in bags to keep the ants off! I don't think they will shrivel either with that skin.  I didn't mind the taste of the skin either, it's not sweet and countered that real honey sweet of the pulp for me.   

I would pick the one pictured now and go by your own taste pref , let one go further and try that . We found we liked a few brown spots on them.

Oh that really looks fantastic !! Did the skin bother you in any way?  We found at that ripeness the skin was not an issue. My hubby loves honey sweetness and this was by far his fave! Of course our ripe fig varieties are limited . I think he just likes the really sweet taste ! And that's not bad !
