Ok, I have a couple of Bills Figs SIPs. I haven't used them in a few years and I am going to set them up again instead. I originally used the soils he uses and the pot is HEAVY. I plan to keep them on my deck and I don't want to kill myself. I have had discussions in the past with other members and I see a lot of people using peat based miss with SIPs. I have been using Farfard 52 for all my trees the last few seasons and I usually won't add anything and its been working out good. So, any last minute recommendations for something better then Farfard 52 that is easy to come by, anything I could add to the 52 to help? Will it be good for a few seasons? Keep in mind I would like them to be a as light as reasonably possible without water in the bottom...

I've used 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 moisture control potting mix, a handful of lime and some Osmocote for food. It kept it light enough.
You might have to root prune more often as those roots will grow fast in there.

I just set one up using mostly compost, some peat moss and some MG potting mix with a few pounds of lime. Without handles, these pots do get heavy, especially after water has been added.

I use cheap pine bark which stays light and miracle grow moisture controll. 50 50. THIS MG HAS COIR IN IT. THIS MIX STAYS LIGHT SO ROOTS REALLY GROW NICLY. IF IT RAINS EXCESS WATER GETS PUSHED OUT AND DOESN'T GET WATER LOGGED. GET THE BARK. ITS CHEAP.

thanks for the suggestions.I'm going to to look around a bit today. I'll see what I can find. plains pine bark seems to be hard to find. The farfard had a lot in it already. I won't mind the weight to much if I wasn't trying to keep them on the deck. Getting them up the steps will be a work out. Someday if I get pavers this won't be to much of a issue...
