Little Ruby Fig from Well Spring Gardens

Hello Everyone,

Is anyone growing this fig? Description only says, "Small tree produces abundant red colored fruit." Here's the link: http://wellspringgardens.com/fig-little-ruby

Is this the same fig Jon has listed as "Little Red?" See here: http://figs4fun.com/Thumbnail_Little_Red.html

My other thought is that Little Ruby could be something similar to FMD's NJ Red. They both have red skin and have dwarf-like characteristics.

Anyone have any experience with this one?

-Ross

There are other Ruby figs (Ruby 3 and Ruby 4) listed at:

http://figs4fun.com/Varieties.html

I got my Ruby3 from R. Watt but not impressed with performance in Zone 5.

Ottawan, I did see those, but Jon's pictures indicate that Ruby 3 is a black fig & Ruby 4 is green if I'm not mistaken. Little Ruby is red!

Ross, a few weeks ago I bought a Little Ruby on Ebay from Well Spring Gardens, along with several other fig plants. LR was about 4 inches in height upon arrival, and although small, healthy.

I repotted into a larger container, and LR seems to be growing already- I think she's already a beautiful little tree, although of course I can't tell you anything about the fruit at this point..

Initially i tried to order at least a few of the dwarf varieties because it's necessary to grow most of my trees in pots right now.
Interesting thread, and i'm also hoping to learn more about this variety.

I bought Little Ruby from Wellsprings website mid season this year.  So far she has be a good strong grower, even in my climate where figs grow very slow, and expect to see figs in the coming season (2016).

So not a ton to add right now, hopefully soon!

Ruby 3 and 4 sound intriguing...I can't imagine what flavors of cucumber and strawberry would be like.

Since those varieties have black and green skin, I wonder if there's a red Ruby which would be Ruby 1 or 2, and which Little Ruby springs from. It would also make sense to call a red fig "Ruby".

~all i can say is i bought three trees from wellspring over the last two years, and not a complaint to be had, very satisfied ,they all grew up well, chicago hardy, white marselies ,and desert king,~

Good to hear, Scott. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about it. Mine hopefully will fruit as well this year.

So far I have 10 fig trees from WellSprings and I'm happy with them all.  I'll post if I get fruit this coming season.

How big can I get it to?

Mine is a fast grower, and most TC figs can grow 6-7 feet in a year anyway.

Ok, so i asked wellspring and they said 4-5 feet in ground, so your right, I could probably push it to 6 feet

Any updates? I received the fig

Anyone care to update on what you think of this "Little Ruby" variety? How does it grow? Will it fruit fast? And is the fruit tasty?

Does anyone have figlets on this one this year? I've got this one on the chopping block and it's too small to give me any figs this year. Considering it for rootstock for next year.

Did this ripen for anyone yet?

Im interested in knowing more about this one too.  I have a couple I got from an online retailer as well.  They arent going to produce this year for me but would be cool to know what to expect :)
