just want to share with you a pic of my very productive LSU Champagne........vigorous upright grower with closed eye.....  

brian, I have all of the LSU orchard figs except Champagne and Hunt, the grafts of which died on my multigraft frankenfig. 

I believe they are both celeste-like figs, and I can afford to forgo them in favor of more exotic varieties on my few remaining grafting spots. 

Please keep us updated as I'd love pics and your opinion on the ripe figs.

this one did not come from JR,but I do have one from JR ,its a smaller fig about the size of a celeste and color is the same,I much rather this variant........

Brian can you compare the flavor of both versions of LSU Champagne? I have one from JR I will just taste this year. It's frustrating that different LSU plants have the same name, all of my LSU figs are from Mr.Robin, so I always wonder also.

Brian, I like what I see. Congrats and hope they taste yummie-yummie. My LSU Champagne from Jon don't look as big but delicious & productive. Seems there are a few strains of LSU Champagne.

Hey brian, good looking tree, I get off wednesday, I just may have to come visit, lol. I just started some cuttings of golden celeste but I'm almost positive they are not champagne.  I would like the one you have, maybe I can bring you one of the golden celeste trees I started for a trade and we can eventually compare.

Nice plant...I have a Champagne from Just Fruits and one from Petals. Both have fruit so fingers crossed!

Your tree looks real good.  This is my Champagne from Petals that I got a couple years ago.  It makes a pretty golden fig that is very tasty.

hey Mike, both are wery similar in taste ,the small fig has a more concentrated figgy taste than the larger one .........

Thanks for starting this topic and sharing your pictures and info.

Champagne PP has been ripening figs one at a time over the last 2 weeks. This summer has been cooler than normal and other cultivars have not been ripening properly, but Champagne has been the exception. A few dozen figs are currently swelling and ripening at the same time. I picked this one a little early, but even with the colder weather the figs have developed a sweet rich jammy interior. The skin is thin and chewy, there is seed crunch with light flavor with a sweet creamy rich pulp. The sweetness and flavor only increases as the brown sugar spots increase, but I couldn't wait. There are a few dozed more to come so I'll post a few pictures of the uglier and tastier figs when they're picked.

thanks Charles........the Champagne is a very under rated fig,its a very prolific grower,very productive with very sweet complete taste and is easy to grow.

I had one fig ripen from my Champagne tree early in the season, it was its first fig. Not memorable, now I have a bunch of green figs that have just stayed dormant most of the summer. Not sure if they will give me another ripe fig before the season ends. My improved Celeste has performed similarly, though the first few ripe figs were pretty good. Now it just drops a fig now and then, without any more ripening. LSU tiger has done best of the three, with a fair amount of ripe figs, and pretty tasty. It's the first year in the ground, so maybe things will improve next year.

Just picked these figs today...
They've developed sugar spots and are not as sweet as when ripening in warm weather, but they are still good with a rich creamy flavor... there are still lots more on the tree : )

Awesome thread on an awesome fig. We tasted the champagne at the LSU field day a year and a half ago and we (I and Mrs K) both fell in love with it. One of the cuttings is three feet tall and looks like there are brebas showing. Does anyone know if it produces a brebas crop or is it a main crop only fig?

Hi Chris. I only get one crop ( main) from it, but it has to be one of the most productive cultivars I own. I got mine from JFE a few years ago but wow! It produces on every node. Not my most photogenic fig, but really is productive, without a doubt. I highly recommend it to any fig grower for vigor and production for sure!

I'm really looking forward to tasting them again.
I took five cuttings from the LSU field tree , four took, I kept one and gifted the rest to good friends.
A couple of months ago another good fig friend sent me a couple of IC cuttings with"friends" . Three Champagne cuttings amongst those friends!! Karma? Maybe .
One thing''s for sure, I'm keeping at least another one for my collection!

I'm thinking Champagne and Alma would be similar figs in taste (light color and sugar sweet). If you could only have one of the two, which one and why? Assuming you're in the proper zone for each, of course.
