Luv Fig aka Wolf

This fig costs a bomb in Malaysia. It was auctioned off with a reserve price of RM8000 @ USD2000 recently. It was rumored ( may be true) a collector bought a tree to the tune of RM10,000-RM20,000. It is said that only 2 families have this ancient fig previously. Originated from Lombardi Italy. Anyone in USA growing this or have more information on it?

Is this the Paolo Belloni (Pomona Gardens) fig called "Luv"?  I have heard it is one of his favorites.  Can you provide any other information on it?  I wonder what makes it so sought after other than the fact that it is rare.

Steve, I really don't know much about this fig except that it is rare. Another name for it is Lupo. A few Malaysians went to Italy to source for the figs. At the moment the bidding price is RM9100.
Yes Dave, that's the fig.

Steve, Paolo Belloni did come to Malaysia last year to give a talk on figs on the invitation of Dato Syed Elias of Fig Malaysia.

Love that skin and flesh colour!  Luv looks like another another fig for my wish list..lol

Curious Luv is not an Italian word wonder how that name arose?
In Italy this fig is also called Lupo (wolf).  The first 2 characters of Lupo match could it be v was substituted for p to give it a nice ring or is it an acronym of some sort?

It is one of paolos most favourite variety, I hope people won't start fighting over this variety lol. Here are some unedited pictures .

Slow grower but excellent tasting fruits. Came from Paolos few years ago.

Navid.

Yes I have this fig from Paolo. The word LUV means Lupo (wolf) in the local dialect in northern Italy where Paolo found this fig, he told me that himself in person when he gave me the cutting. I visited him again in March 2016 and he told me he was no longer selling cuttings because someone had just sold a LUV cutting for the equivalent of 1,350 euros, he was upset, the person never even thanked him. I will be making some new plants or cuttings that I will give away and pay shipping for a donation to Pomona Gardens in my name for $ 1,000. Please contact me first. The plant is young and has never produced for me, always a possibility of mislabeling.

I hope one day we can both compare our pelligrinos , they are really beautiful and very tasty fruit. We get tons of it every year.

Yes Vinny Hope one of this days we may be able to compare Pellegrino UK side by side to Pellegrino CT

Some fig collectors in Malaysia are doing it for the money. Big money. For small hobbyists like me, there is no way we can afford those varieties. The cheapest airlayer that you can get is btm6 for around usd15 each. Cuttings will definitely be more than usd10 each. The high price took the fun out of growing trees. Since I started this hobby in 2012, the price never seems to go down. Does seems that growing figs in Malaysia is for the elite. Thank goodness I have a few friends who like to trade trees with me.

Hello,
You probably got it from me . My pelligrino is similar to Mario's Pellegrino but we haven't compared it yet . I think Mario has posted his picture somewhere on this forumn . When I was looking for a name for this variety, Mario told me that it looks similar to an unknown he got from a genteman called Pellegrino. However I always spelled it as Pelligrino Uk.

Yes it is true... Malaysia has a fig mafia hahahaa... :)

Anyway...

Fact:

Very difficult to grow fig trees in Malaysia because of the weather and the soil... Now due to the strike of el nino my area didn't received any rain since January but if I dig up the soil it is wet after the top 2 inches... And just imagine when during the monsoon season it is raining for weeks without stop (if anybody curious I can show some monsoon pictures) So I spend about US$150 per week to buy pots and potting soil for my figs... My growing site had been topped up with 26 trucks of soil/rock/sand to avoid my site flooded. But I still grow in pots. And I am not the big big mafia only the small one haha :)
Of course the selling price is high because the cost of growing also high.

But in Hungary I get the cuttings in October then bury them into the ground and cover them with dry leaves. Uncover them in April and wait. That's all.

In Malaysia if grown well after 2 months there are syconia but in Hungary it takes 2 years :)

I think growing figs in Malaysia is a challenge -- they grow like weeds year round. The high humidity/rainfall + loads of
bugs are indeed challenges. Some contacts there tells me they won't even bite into a fig without checking whether there
are worms inside. I get good feed backs regarding VdB doing very well there.

Helike13, wow, 2 years?!! And I complain about cuttings that take two months, ha!

Yes in Hungary fig cuttings bear syconia and fruit in the second year...

same in indonesia ?
