Makedonia Dark

This one to me is a very good Fig and grower. Don't hear too much about it. Reportedly, originally brought from Makedonia by an immigrant, but Bass Introduced it.  Very good grower. : )

What a beauty.  I have a funny story about the word "Makedonka".  My grandfather's parents were from Croatia/Serbia, they referred to as Macedonia.  They used the word Makedonka as slang for a redheaded woman.  Interesting that your fig is a redhead.  Happy figging, Jodi

Very nice Frank...can you describe the flavor?

Lewi, it's got a very good Berry Taste and it sure is a good grower. Let me know this Fall and I will send you some cuttings! : )

Jodi... Your comments caught my attention so I figured to throw in my 2 cents for what it is worth. Prior to splitting into 6 independent republics, the 6 were together united in a Federation called Yugoslavia (Jugoslavija). Macendonia with its capital in Skopje was one of the 6. The others being Bosnia/Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia. Macedonia as an independent republic is different from the Greek region of Makedonia which lies directly south of the border of the Macedonian republic. The Greek and Macedonian nations have been disputing the name of the republic for the last 27 years or so and it has apparently been one of the stumbling blocks to Greek approval of Macedonian entry into the EU. 2017 has seen some progress to settling those disputes and apparently there is a possible solution if the works which would see Macedonia enter into the EU carrying the name of FYROM or the "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" which is how it is currently known in the halls of the UN.

Hi Frank.
That's a great looking fig, enjoy,I'm still waiting for my figs to ripen, zone 4 isn't fig haven.

Thank you Frank, I am sending a PM. :)

Thanks for posting the beautiful photos, Frank. Does the Macedonia Dark fig have an open or a closed eye?

Hi Christine, mine has a  closed eye. Thanks for the kind comments! : )

Do you believe it fits the profile of a Mt Etna type?

Hey Nic, Just to be honest with you, I really don't know. I know one thing this is a delicious Fig and grows very well. : )

Would you or anyone else be able to spare some cuttings this fall so I can test my theory?

Nic, hit me up around 1st week in Nov.

Thank you so much

Nic,

I am close to you and may have an air layer of makadonia dark for you as well ( will have to check). I believe it is a Mt. Etna, and among one of my earlier producing ones, along with Unk Dahrouge Lebanese, and bisirri #3, which have all started producing. All other Mt. Etnas are getting close, but the aforementioned ones are 7-10 days ahead, at least. It would be a good one for your project, I think. It suffered very minimal dieback this past year in ground ( caveat: it was 3 years old and this past winter was mild).

Frank,

You are the man! Thank you for always updating us on some stellar performing varieties with awesome pictures! I love seeing your posts on these great varieties. Thanks for your contributions to the forum.

Thank you Bill, and as always you are the man!!! Text me and let me know

Ah very interesting.  I am not sure where my great grandparents were from, I think it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire when they came over around 1900.  They were coal miners coming to New Mexico.  Unfortunately, they did not successfully propagate any figs in the Zuni Mountains at 7600' where they settled.  A place with a very tumultuous history for sure.  Cheers, Jodi

Hi Frank.
If you should have a cutting leftover I would love to have it.
