Marking Cuttings (with Markers)

I know a lot of you guys that sell cuttings use those "paint markers" to scribble the variety right on the cutting itself.  I want to do that at least on my unused cuttings rather than keep them in a million little zip locks.  Does it matter what kind of paint they use?  Are oil-based paints safe to use or do have to get something else to use on plants?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, rather be safe than sorry.

I am using a permanent marker called "Snowman White" and it works well. I have seen others use a generic white Sharpie without issues.

Acrylic seems to write better and look cleaner but oil based seems more durable and doesn't wash off as easily.

Write it on the container or a plant tag too. I have cuttings that had to be cut shorter due to rot and now the marking isn't visible above the soil.

Mike this is the one you want been using it for years not a problem on the cuttings and I also mark my pots with it you could find them on ebay pretty cheap

The Nissen work great. Though keep in mind if you are like me and use it once a month, it tends to dry out and take some work to get going. Once it is working it works excellent and has held up to heat, water, light and friction.

Thanks for the info.  That answers my question.
