These could have all stayed on another day or so but some of my folks pick early due to squirrels.  I ate at least a hundred of these in a couple days.  To those haters out there who don't like Southern Brown Turkey, good for you but for us out here in the South East it's the gift that keeps on giving.  These figs come from a tree in NC that is at least 30 years old.

 
If you wait for this fig to be dead ripe it turns fairly red on the inside.  This is definitely an under rated crop.

I'm very curious about your fig and tree. Your pictures of the fruit look very similar to an unknown found here in Houston, that was previously identified as probably an English/Eastern Brown Turkey.

Cliff - Your "Sunbird" is the same as my English BT.  I believe mine to be true to type, from a very good source.  I think yours, and mine, are darker due to local conditions (East Texas)

No, they don't taste the same.  The California Brown Turkey has gotten a bad rap as a "bland" fig.  I think this is probably a personal taste thing.  It doesn't have a pronounced figgy flavor, but is sweet and very pleasant.  The Eastern (Southern) Brown Turkey is intensely sweet and figgy.  It is very similar to Celeste and is often confused with it.

The taste of the European Brown Turkey is somewhere in between.  I think they are very good, but there are a number of varieties, some better than others.  Many suffer from very heavy Fig Mosaic Virus.

There is a great deal of confusion about these figs.  A lot of it stemming from Condit assuming that European BT and Southern BT were the same fig.  It's understandable since neither seemed to do well in California.

This is the same fig just a little more ripe.  These do get darker and when they do they are awesome but again I didn't pick these.  The "Sunbird" is basically the same fig from my understanding.  Sometimes people just add an interesting name to spice up the product lol.

The fig from my pictures is still technically an unknown. It was just found in the Sunbird neighborhood.

I posted about it because I am still trying to wrap my head around all this Brown Turkey varieties stuff, and to be able to understand the differences. I'm also interested specifically in the Southern Brown Turkey right now.

Looks to me these 3 BTs share the basic leaf shape although some slight differences.  

Is there another BT with 5  longer lobed?  
Also curious as to what the origin of California Brown Turkey is?

With figs I never say never. :-))  But I'm not aware of any more Brown Turkey types than the three mentioned.  I do think of these as categories or families, though.  There are many varieties of European Brown Turkey for instance, and I've gotten some figs that I consider California Brown Turkeys though they aren't identical to that variety.

All those figs seem to be maincrops figs.
European BT is known for it brebas - and they make a lot of brebas. You won't find a lot of people getting the maincrop of the European BT, at least in Zone7.
The maincrop on my BT has not started to ripen this year.

This is probably going to sound strange to you, but no one (that I'm aware of in this country) realized that the European Brown Turkeys were grown for the breba crop in Europe until fairly recently.  I realized what was going on, when I saw a picture of LaRadek in the snow, covered with main crop figs.  I do get a few brebas, but not many.  The European BTs that I have are very late for my area in the northeast US (zone 6a), andI've been trying to switch them to the breba crop.  No luck so far.  I think I might have to pull off all the main crop figs that form and prune off all twiggy growth.  I'm trying that with a few Violette de Bordeaux (I have more of them to work with) as that seems to be another fig that is grown for brebas in Europe.  Is that correct?

The fig that I posted on can produce quite a large breba crop. At least the mother tree did a couple of years ago. Not many this last year. But then I got almost no breba this year either. Follow the link below to see the pictures originally posted on this tree, including nice pics of the brebas.

That's what my European BT brebas look like Cliff - just not so many!  :-))  But your leaf is a different sight - well formed and free of virus markings and distortions.  Most of my European BT leaves are badly affected.  The best of the lot leaf-wise is Sweet George.  They look a little better if you can get them growing vigorously, but that's difficult.  It's a pleasure to see a healthy looking European BT.

Two of our four fig trees are Brown Turkey.  I'm in King George County, Virginia.  We like to wait until they are very dark brown before picking...so big, round, juicy, fruity, and sweet.  Every year is a different experience.  This summer we had more rain than usual, and I think that is why so many of our brown turkeys burst open before ripening...making them very inviting for yellow jackets, bees, and bald-faced hornets which love eating thes lucious figs.  I was stung once.  From then on, all through August and early September, I picked figs around 11pm when the scary flying guys were back in their nests.  Used my strap-on-the-head forehead light.  Last year we had very few flying pests on the figs, and their was much less rain.  Anyway...Brown Turkey, so different than Black Mission.  Both delicious!
