I see a couple figs with specific reference to Abruzzo, Italy. Has anyone heard of a Molisano fig, or perhaps Campobasso? I have Maggie's fig from Chieti and Mario's from south of Castel di Sangro. Anything else out there and how do they rate?

Salce is said to be from Molise.

One I call U. Abruzzo cama from a nursery. The family who owns the nursery came from Abruzzo. The other variety I call U. Abruzzi. It was collected from a house in NJ. The owner said it was from Abruzzi (with an I) I believe they are the same town / region. I could not confirm they are or are not the same fig. I have not had a ripe fig from either so that's all I have.

Campobasso is a city (province) in Molise region. Chieti is a town in the province of Pescara in Abbruzzo region. Castel di Sangro is a town in  the province of Aquila also in Abbruzzo. What might be confusing the now 2 regions of Abbruzzo and Molise where once one region. I have some figs that i could trade that came directly from different towns in the province of Teramo, Teramo is the most northern and mountainous province in Abbruzzo and where i came from in 1958.

Yes, Salce is from Fornelli  in northwest Molise and a very tasty fig.

Abruzzo and Molise were formerly treated as one region (Abruzzo e Molise). Back in the late 60s or early 70s, they were separated. L'Aquila, where that terrible earthquake happened a few years ago,  is the capital of Abruzzo. Campobasso is the capital of Molise.

Aaron, I am still interested in learning more about your two unknowns. Do you have more information narrowing down where in Abruzzo these figs originated, or a way to get it?

Mario, That sounds enticing. I have mentioned on this forum that my grandfather came from San Pietro Avellana, just east of Castel di Sangro, but across the border in Molise.

Dale both those towns are familiar to me, I used to go trough there 50 years ago with my father and I go by that area often when I go to Italy now, I will stop next time . I have relatives in Roccaraso only 20 miles north of Castel di Sangro, my last name is Di Natale.

The nursery is still around. I can try to get more of the story next spring. Cuttings would be easy as well.

My boy met a fellow in Cleveland from Rionero Sannitico who got excited about figs from home. I promised to start some. Know any Palumbo, Di Giacomo, Giambattista, DiPinta, Petrarca? Related to all.

Dale we have a big Di Giacomo family in my town of San Vito (Teramo) some of them emigrated to Philadelphia area in the late 1950, supposedly they're very successful in ravioli producing business. Population in San Vito less then one thousand those days,way less now.
