My First Figo Preto - Now Ripening

So here's my first Preto, finally starting to ripen. Main crop. This tree is in a 4 gallon SIP, and is way ahead of the ripening of my in-ground Black Madeira. I'll finally get to taste the fig that everyone raves about.

Can't wait for it to fully ripen!

Congrats!  Looks very nice enjoy it.

Looks like a few more days and then the wait will be over. Ahhhh
Enjoy it, Cliff

Compared to my BM, my Preto is a rock star.  Put out a fig on almost every node this year.  It didn't have a good enough head start so I had to pinch most of them but I'm just trying to get as much growth as possible looking ahead to next year.  My source was tyro...

Thanks for the comments.

I only let this Preto make, or keep, about 5 or 6 figs. The rest I removed. My BM however is loaded. I've actually started removing some figs from it too, as it is only a second year tree and suffered some significant die-back this last winter.

Looking mighty fine.... Looks like you have some awesome good eats in your future! Congratulations!

I'd dedicate a net for this one to make sure that no bird gets it first. Congratulations on this top fig.

lucky you!

I have only one, but it's still green...crossing fingers that it will turn ripe soon!

Thanks Sas. I plan to net many of my in-ground trees early next year. I didn't do a very good job this year. And I plan for this Preto to be planted in the ground when it goes dormant this winter.

It's a good thing that I took that picture when I did. This is what greeted me when I got home yesterday.

I still ate it, but I am sure that it could have been much better.

This fig if overwatered will split. I've got mine on drip irrigation.

Thanks for the comment on watering. I will start watching the water better. I have been watering frequently, as the tree is recovering from a bad case of rust and just now starting to get back to showing a lot of new growth.

The only other fig on the tree showing color has already started to split in the same manner.

Last year, after having a watery and split fig, I drastically reduced watering. So when I was watering by hand, I kept the pot in shade and the tree in full sun. It sat in the large Walmart SIP and kept ripening figs till December. I would sprinkle water once a day, enough to fill the bottom reservoir and kept my eye on the leaves. Perhaps I got lucky and only missed the last two. This led to having perfect figs. Unfortunately I was picking one or two a day. I would've liked to pick twenty or thirty.
This past winter after moving it to a 25 gallon pot, it died all the way to the soil level, but came back with a vengence. It might even set fruit before it's too late.
It sits in full sun and gets drip irrigation for five minutes three times per day. It looks very happy so far, perfect shiny leaves.
Hope yours recovers.

Here's my Preto's all new growth this season. So far total growth from soil level to top is approximately 5 ft 6".
I don't think that a 25 gallon pot is enough for this monster, but then I won't be able to handle it:)

I got a second Preto. This one split too, but not as bad. I also let it get a little riper. Now I understand what the fuss about these figs are. Excellent! I can't wait for more and my BM's to ripen.
