I have some Negronne trees, planted last spring. (near Portland, OR)They are now about 6-7 feet tall. How can I tell when the figs are ripe? They get direct sun from noon to about 6 pm.Several figs are turning purple, but are not ready to fall off.Thanks.Mac
Most figs droop instead of pointing straight out. They also feel like a ripe avocado where there is just a little give to them. Sometimes for the high sugar or honey figs. They will stick to your fingers
Any pictures you can show us? How long have the figs been on the tree? Negronne retains a purple hue from the get-go. When ripe, they become a dark purple and nearly double in size. Once they droop straight down with a very slight shriveled look, they should be ready to pick. A gentle squeeze will tell you if they're ready. This goes for just about all varieties. Some varieties are ripe when they have cracked skin while some will appear slightly shriveled without cracked skin.
Well, I was just about to get some photos, when I decided to try one (purple, drooping a little, soft), and it was definitely ripe.I guess we are all set now. Thanks for the answers.Mac
How is it taste? Please, I grow it in pot, Not sure that it is good in PNW cool summer, If it is good, I will try it in ground.
I should have said, it tasted amazing...Yes, they grow fast in the ground, but they should have full sun.Mine get half sun (noon to 6), but I am going to move them to full sun this January.Mac
Thanks for your reply, I will plant it in ground and hoping that it bear tasted figs next year.
