New kid on the block-Introduction

Hello all. Very happy to have discovered this forum and have been enjoying it a great deal so I figured it was high time to introduce myself and jump in the pond with the rest of you rather then sitting on the sidelines.

I started "figging"  4 years ago with a tree I got at a local Loblaws superstore. They had no name just called a Hardy fig. I have been advised that they are likely the variety Hardy Chicago. This tree died my first winter....storing it unprotected in my attached garage just wasn't good enough up here in the great white north...lol. I got another tree late....mid june...the next year and got 3 brebas off it before it died back in the fall. I stored it in my cold cellar and last spring it hit the ground running and gave my about a dozen brebas...but they all dropped before ripening. I was getting discouraged and  was just about ready to throw in the towel on this fig experiment when my main crop figs started to form. I was in heaven. On October 19 last fall I harvested my last fig and that gave me a total of 76 ripe figs off this great little tree. I started cuttings off this tree in March and now have 3 other young trees on the go as well as a Desert King tree I got this spring.  My 3 year old tree now has over 170....yes I counted...main crop figs on it.

I have always had a big veggie garden and have grown many many vegetables and herbs in the last 32 years but so far nothing else has matched the enjoyment I'm getting out of playing this fig game.

I am looking forward to learning more as I putter along with this. I have also noticed some  other Canadian/GTA members on here. I'd be very happy to swap stories with you "close to me" folks.

Thats all for now. Thanks all for making this a great little place to enjoy my morning coffee.  I hope to be able to contribute and help out myself as time goes on.

Regards,
Steve

Welcome to the forum Steve...

Welcome from Louisiana. How you keep the birds etc from eating your figs. My lsu purple has lots of figs and i dont get any ripe figs. Birds get them all. Not so bad on my light colored figs.

Just lucky they don't eat my figs.....yet. My one tree is in a pot planted 4 feet from my house and 10 feet from my back porch...in a small semi private side yard. Big Oaks and Maples and a 10-12 foot high cedar hedge behind the house. That's where the critters seem to stay so far.

Welcome to fig forum, Steve

Hey Steve, Welcome to the forum, Good Luck this year! : )

Welcome to the forum Steve. I too am from the GTA and also new to this forum(about a month). You will learn a lot of helpful tips from this forum. I went through a fase were I kind of gave up but after researching more and experimenting It payed off and I have learnt to eat more and more figs every year. Every year I learn more which means more success. Good luck and feel free to ask any questions

Welcome!  You're off to a great start.  Just 2,500 more varieties and 3 heated greenhouses and you'll know what figs are all about!

Welcome! I give you four weeks before you double your fig count. :)

Welcome to the F4F forum, Steve! I love gardening & growing veggies too. Like you, figs are so enjoyable to me. Many of us do grow more than figs. And there are some real pros on here!

Welcome, Steve! Thanks for joining us.

Welcome! You will learn alot here. Enjoy your figs!

Way to go in not being discouraged too quickly :)

welcome aboard steve ,sounds like you are doing good growing figs ,keep on growing~

Hi and welcome Steve   this is just a fun and great place to be.   Everyone is truly glad you joined and look forward to hearing more from you in the future.   No question is a dumb question and nobody will be mean unkind or unhelpful here.   By helping one another we help ourselves be better figgers.   Mistakes will be made and figs will croak but we all keep trying.

Hi Steve

I actually saw some fig trees at Loblaws this year and was tempted to buy one but there is no variety name on the label and with my limited space backyard I'm targeting only the varieties i need. Anyways I'm in the GTA and would love to trade cuttings with you and trade stories. This summer has sucked with all the rain. I can't wait for some figs to ripen. Maybe even get a GTA fig Gathering started like they do in some other areas..
