Greetings from Niagara Falls!!(the multicoloured money side) Love this forum and all invaluable information I've learned in such a small amount of time. Just wanted to post something so I felt like less of a lurker lol
Currently have a HC in the ground
And in pots
VdB
LSU purple
Stella
Peter's honey
Atreano
Desert King
Not allowed any more or my husband will figgin kill me. Having said that I do love the challenge of sneaking in plants and strategically clustering them to appear like there's less.
Thanks again for all the great reading on this forum :)

Welcome! There's a fig called Niagara Black (real name Longue d'Aout) that's a must have for your area. Once your hubby tastes the fruit he'll want two of them :)

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!! :)
rmulhero- you're lucky your bf is taking an interest! Mine still cant tell the figs from the citrus. Having said that, his hobby of mixing music is about a 1 on the excitement scale for me lol
pino-i'd say I'm noob-ish? Have had the HC for 5 years. I absolutely love it. Tastes great and always is loaded with figs. 4 years back I had purchased 3 other figs all labeled "red honey" but all having completely different leaf shapes lol Kept them in pots. All fruited, one was green the other two were purple. One was exceptionally tasty and then.....a few winters back the hubby was doing work on our cistern in the unheated sunroom and put the pots outside. I never noticed cause I'm not observant at all! I often get distracted by birds and shiney objects, but that's another thing....anyways first night -11, second night -13...figs were fried :( I kept them hoping they'd come back(wishful thinking I know lol) but by the end of July they had a date with the compost pile. So now the potted figs I currently have, I've only had for 1-3 years. They're all in root prunning pots and are doing extremely well :) The figs off the LSU purple this year were ridiculously good!!! I picked the first one when I was just kind of walking by, and before I knew it I was just standing there spaced out in tasty fig heaven!!
rcantor-I read about this Niagara Black/Longue D'Aout when I was searching good varieties for this region. Can this be planted and protected in ground? The man doesn't care if I add to my collection outside, he just doesn't want to compete with plants for floor space in the garage/unheated sunroom/basement. And me, if I could just live in a greenhouse.....

From one newbie to another: HELLO!
__________________ Wish list: Galicia Negra, Violetta, Violette de Sollies, Dan_la's Black Beauty 10, Craven's Craving, Most important : YOUR FAVORITE FIG . A lot of people put emphasis on popular/exotic cultivars, which is great because it highlights some of the better fig varieties; however, I am most interested in the figs our members love regardless of pedigree. Currently Growing: a bunch of varieties.

Welcome to the forum, its a great group of people and what a VAST amount of knowledge to be shared especially climate/varieties/experience. I am on the same page with having to hide or cloak my gardening hobby, my wife was not so happy when i converted our small backyard into a full vegetable garden and next year its going to be a fig orchard as well. Proper placement and learn some good fig recipes and he'll be happy. Baked Brie....Dark Chocolate covered w/salt...mix it up to get him interested ;)

Welcome! They say a way to a man's heart is through his stomach, so you might try finding a couple of figgy recipes that he really, really likes and then he won't mind if you get more. ;)

Thanks for recipe idea! Brie, figs, dark chocolate n salt sounds ammmmazing. Though it's a bit of a walk from the fig "orchard" to the house and those pesky figs have a way of disappearing before I get there. Must be a hole in my basket

The kids would alert Barbra when I got new trees (they seem to care more than she does). Last year I took pics of a jumping spider carrying a wasp (its prey) in one of the containers. They don't check my fig activities anymore.

Excellent photos! The threat of a spider hiding out wouldn't work for my kiddos...they are country kids and, with the exception of bloodsuckers like mosquitoes, chiggers, fleas and ticks, they love pretty much anything that slithers, jumps, flies, crawls, or spins webs. Even hornets have their place here, as they help keep the fly population under control. :)
