Hello,
I am new to figs. I had my wife get me two Brown Turkey Figs trees last year. One produced a few figs last season. I am hoping to add 8 new trees this year. I am hoping to pick them up locally adding a few different varieties. I hope to learn a lot here and look forward to speaking with new folks. Thanks for having me.

Welcome to the forum Kevin, you will learn a lot here just like we have.

Consider buying from trusted sellers here, locally you will be lucky to get a correctly labled tree....and it wont be the best variety.

IMHO you could look up what goes good in NY and NJ, if it produces good tasty figs there, it will do better in the Commonwealth.

Sic semper tyranus. ;)

Welcome to the forum!  You will find all the information to hone in on the best varieties for your location that's for sure.

Welcome!

Welcome to the forum Kevin. Hopefully you find the right varieties for your area. This would spread your ripening dates over several weeks and extend your fig season well into the fall.

Welcome! Planning for only eight trees? You had better make room for at least 20 then (conservatively). Or stop ready the forum and reviews immediately.....

Welcome to the fig addiction... abandon all hope and rational thinking now and make space for new varieties...

Cliff, 8 seemed like a fair amount because they are going in the ground. Maybe I should throw them in pots and go for 20.

Kevin - Your thinking matches my original plan. It is till basically the plan. But I now have about 22 in pots, several in the ground, and about 30 varieties rooting. All in less than a year :-). I still hope to end up with about 10 -12 in the ground. But I am trailing many more than planned. I am keeping all my trial trees in large SIP's for the first year or two.

You need to pick not only the ones that are reported to taste the best, but also the ones that grow best in your yard. Everyone's taste is also different.

I don't know, then there is the idea that I recently lost a few citrus due to our last cold snap, and maybe I should put figs back in their place.... :-)

Welcome!  I don't know if VA is warm enough to ripen a BT so that it tastes good.  I wouldn't put them in ground until you find out.  Best of luck!

Welcome to the forum.  You will find lots of information here and help as well when needed. Doubt you will stop at 8 trees. I thought I would stop at half a dozen but I am now up to about 40.  So many different ones to try to see what does well and what you like.  Fortunately, figs can be kept fairly small and you don't need a lot of space to grow a lot of them till you find the ones which please you the most.  Good luck.
