I'm an experienced gardener, but new to figs. I've had one struggling in a pot for several years, I'm not sure of the variety, but it could be 'petite negra' (?). I planted it in the ground late last summer, wrapped/insulated it after the leaves had fallen, and in part thanks to a very mild winter, it survived with almost no freezing damage, and has filled out nicely. If all goes well, I should have ripe figs in a month or two, to help with identification.

Thanks to the generosity of a local grower, I have added 4 varieties to my little collection:
Bari, Chicago, Danny's Delight, and Sandy. these are established 2nd year cuttings, and I upgraded 2 of them to 1 gallon pots, and the other 2 were large enough to join the other fig behind my garage. I'm in zone 6b, and the south-facing area behind the garage is a microclimate that is probably 7a.
I have these planted 5' or 6' apart, which seems like good spacing. I'll have lots of questions, I'm sure, and I look forward to suggestions and comments on what I'm doing here.
Thanks,
Rick in CT

Welcome to the forum, Rick.... that was a heck of a celebration last weekend on the Thames... Fireworks to cap the Saturday night festivities were pretty awesome....

Rick -- Welcome from just up the road in RI.  Our growing conditions are very similar.  Ping me if you have any questions that I can help with.

Thanks for the welcome, folks. I'm glad to see that there are a number of fig aficionados locally. Is there a fig growers group in the general area?

How many varieties/which varieties are you all growing now? How large are your trees, and what is your yield like? Do you have any particular challenges from bugs, squirrels, or other critters, especially with ripening fruit? Any general cultural challenges to consider in our general area?

Welcome Rick and hello from Maine. Your biggest challenge will be your wife if you are married ;) they should do well for you down there!

Hail from Greenwich!  Wow, lot's of CT people!

hey Dvlsgro!
Nope--no spouse!
I looked at your profile, realized you live in a freezer! Do you have figs in pots there?

Welcome Rick,

You are right between me and Joe. Hope to hit RI in the next week. If you need a plant I'll be driving by at some point soon.

"lives in a freezer", hilarious. Someone who thinks South is lower Maine, lol.

C'mon down! Devin!

Welcome to the forum Rick. Hope that you have lots of winter storage space.

I'm planning on putting all of mine permanently in the ground, so winter storage indoors isn't really a consideration....
