Welcome, Joe :) Growing figs was new for me when I started a couple of years ago, too. I'm glad I started, fresh figs taste way better than I thought they would. Some advice: - add "NJ zone 6a" to your sig; - keep an eye out for the other folks from around you and do/grow what they do; - read as many of herman2's posts as possible, he lives near you and has trialed bazillions of figs; - develop a wish list of varieties that should do well for you; - VdB, Hardy Chicago, and JH Adriatic are some common but excellent varieties for your area; - keep an eye out for the site's owner (Jon/pitangadiego) posting his cuttings availability list around Feb 1st; - don't buy cuttings from ebay unless it's from a known forum member (lots of scammers); - don't waste your time on tc's (tissue culture plants), start with cuttings from fruiting plants instead for more fruitful early results; - Read through the "Start Here" thread pinned near the top of the board; - make use of this site's great archives (use the search button on top-right of screen); - don't fight the slide into fig addiction, just embrace it :)

Welcome Joe. My advice for you is, 1)-start thinking now about where your going to put all your fig trees and what other plants you will be clearing out of the yard to make room for the more important fig trees. 2)-keep any eye out for free big pots, like when someone cleans out some space and puts them out with the trash. You are going to need them.

Hi Joe. My best advice is to turn and walk away from the fig "hobby" as fast as you are able before it is too late. The addictiveness of growing figs rivals that of crack, so unless you are ready to say goodbye to your garage, extra bedroom and all of your free yard and driveway space, walk away immediately. If you don't believe me, read this first. If that doesn't scare you off, then welcome aboard! :))

Tons of info here. I was up until a last year a Jersey girl but was transplanted and am now trying to take root in NC. There are some great growers in NJ. I loved going to Bill's fig fest. Fig pizza with goat cheese...Yum
