New Ohio wanna be figer

Started this spring with a green cutting from my uncle's fig tree (he said it's a white fig, not helpful) and learned while I went. The tree is coming in great I think. I am pretty hooked at this point. I just want more cuttings to start! I took pictures if you guys could help identify and give any tips? I was also wondering if the new growth should be thicker than the trunk? Seems odd but I really know nothing. Any thoughts on pruning or should I just wait until next year to think about that? Why would one leaf be so much bigger than the rest? I assume these are dumb questions, be gentle lol

Welcome to the forum. Looks like your doing great!!. This fall there will be loads of cuttings available. Dont bother with pruning but up pot to at least 5 gallon and get it out in full sun. You can prune in dormancy over the winter.

From reading on online I thought figs like to be root bound a bit. I should put it in a 5 gallon pot this soon? I was just going to keep up potting it as it grew.

Welcome to the place where everyone has the same addiction and talking about it and sharing pictures only makes the addiction worse.

Whatever you are doing is great, keep doing it.

DO NOT put it out in full sun!!  You want to gradually acclimate it to the sun, start out in an indirect sunlight and let it get used to the sun and then move it to a position of half day sun and then move it to full sun.  August is not the time to expose a newly grown cutting to full sun.  If you move to full sun, you risk complete loss of all leaves or potential loss of the tree.

I bring it in at night but during the day it's outside in full sun for the last 2-3 weeks. I'm babying it, I don't want it out when it's too windy and I haven't kept it out in the rain.

Thanks for replying and please keep the tips coming. I just want to keep learning as much as I can. I live in Northeast Ohio and I will have to bring it in soon. Just looking to give it the best chance before winter.

Is the pot full of roots already? If so I would go to a 5 gallon now . All you really want to do this season is build a good root ball. Next season you will get some growth and the following season it should really put out for you.

This year I went from newly rooted cuttings to either 7 or 15 gallon right from the start. This late in the season 5 gallon will be fine.

Was your uncles fig tree in ground or potted? If in ground you might want to find a nice sunny location to plant it next spring. If in a pot then depending on the size of the tree you may want to go anywhere from 15 to 25 gallon in the spring.

In regards to your leaf question, They all start out small. Some grow larger some don't. No idea why that is. Nothing to worry about though.

In your location you will want a hardy chicago and a few others for the cold hardiness.

How do you check the roots? No, my uncle's is in a pot and mine will be too. I am moving my fig to a bigger pot tonight. I will update with pictures after I'm done.

When do people offer up cuttings? I want to get a few common varieties. Hardy Chicago and brown turkey, because I don't want to spend too much on an unproven method (mine)

Cuttings will store far better if taken from dormant, lignified limbs.  Here in Northern California, that usually occurs around Christmas time.  If you are still stricken with the addiction at that time, just send me a note with your address, and I'll ship some cuttings out to you.

Here it is replanted, I ran out of soil. Next spring it will get a bigger pot and more soil.

I'm not great with California but my sister just moved to Chico, is that near you? She stole my dreams of chickens and bees (which I'll get to). But I'll definitely reach out to you thanks.

Dormant cuttings are typically the best ones to root but green cuttings can be rooted.. I normally only do green if I break a branch or do some pruning.
You'll see this fall around Nov/dec there will be loads of cuttings available. I added 80 new trees this year from cuttings.

Lol 80 trees!?!? You must have some operation going! I am hoping to add a couple maybe 3. This must be how you start!

Welcome to the forum(s). The addiction will overwhelm you unless you place strict limits on your acquisitions and what will become a rapidly growing inventory.... Limits don't really work but they do provide for "plausible deniability" when you are called into a Fig Intervention...   :-)

It all started with 1 hardy chicago fig tree from lowes for 10 bucks. I put it in ground and forgot about it for a couple of years.. Then 1 day i was walking to the car and noticed a fig hanging on it. Really soft and droopy. I picked it and bit into it and that was it. It was off to the races from there.. Went to lowes to looks and see if they had other fig trees but nothing so I went online to see if there was a such thing as a fig forum and found this place. You can see by my join date, that's right about when Hardy Chicago ripens here :)..
Of course I joined right in prime season as everyone was showing off their figs. Now I have over 140 trees and still only that 1 in ground. The rest are in containers from 7-25 gallon. If you were closer I'd tell you to come get a couple. I have a few doubles.

I wanted to share the progress, I feel like after I repotted it started growing down. But IDK really. Starting to branch out a bit. I have more questions though.

When will it start to harden off on the new growth? How do I know when it's dormant? It's kinda cool hear in Northeast Ohio for September 1.

Most figs can take to 25 degrees, so I leave mine out till all leaves fall off, then into the garage. I'm in zone 6a. You babied yours, I have seedlings outside it's 53F and they don't have true leaves yet. no need to bring it in, you want it tough. If mine can't survive the treatment, I don't want them. So far all have. Sure you have to acclimate them, but they need to be ready in a few months to withstand 25F, so mine never see the house except in the winter when I'm rooting cuttings, once spring hits, they will never enter the house again. I will take them in and out for a week or two, no more. Slowly exposing them to the sun and wind etc.
Yeah i wanted to have about 6, sounded good, I have 36 now. I am though eliminating about 16 of them. Keeping what I like best.

If anyone is local to the Southeast MI area, contact me mid October.   I may be getting rid of some larger trees as I do every fall.   These are free for the taking.   I want to spread them around to new fig nuts.   I only ask that you allow me to trim them down so that I can keep the cuttings and bring a garbage bag or two so that I can keep the pot.  If interested, PM me in 3-4 wks.

Ryan,

It'seems a bit surprising how many fig-ophiles there are in Ohio. There are a bunch of old Italian guys in Akron and Cleveland who have figs in pots. I cannot be far from you here in The Fun Center of Ohio. Remind me late in the year and I will send cuttings for postage.

Yes a lot in Ohio! I listen to gardening with Angelo out of Ohio and he often gets calls about figs.  I like that radio show as he is no frills, all about just plant info of common plants people grow, and what works best, and what is good coming out this year. As I grow everything and anything, a fun hobby.
Great offer Dan, I'm nearby, although i already have too many trees myself!!

Dale,

I'm out of Medina county. I know a very Italian guy out of Brunswick with a fig tree (thanks to my Sicilian wife). He makes crazy good wine and sausage. Anyway I know he's not very into figs but he grows his one plant. I need to ask him for a cutting when I see him at church. Don't forget about me come cutting time!

Thanks guys!

Stone'so throw. Remind me in another month or so.
