Newbie cold weather question

Hello everyone!

With some thermal breaks coming through, 40, 35f, I am wondering about my plants in 5 gallon pots.

At around what temperature will it ruin figs that are growing?

Around what temperature will the leaves drop? Is this different for each type because of cold hardiness?

When the leaves drop, does this mean the plant has gone dormant, or just an affect from the cold night?

I have some real nice looking figs growing that probably need anywhere from a day, to a week or two, and will bring some in if necessary.

Thanks again, Mike.

Hi Mike
Good questions!
I don't know the answers.
But I have definitely noticed the ripening process slow to a  stop when the temps dip below 50F at night.  Then if it warms up again ripening resumes.
Leaves drop after a hard frost and that's it for ripening for the year.  although remaining figs will appear to soften and even colour but won't get very sweet.

If I can I do the fig shuffle at night with the plants that still have figs to ripen.

Here its been a long hot summer and they are predicting a colder than normal winter to average things out.

I just did the fig shuffle with mine right now lol. They have too much greenwood still to risk a frost I think. They are saying frost warning and definite 36°F.

Thanks Pino

  Very, helpful, Mike

All my small baby plants, and my Black Madiera went in last night, and again tonight.

I bring the fig plants in when the temp gets in the mid 30's at night. Shortly thereafter I start watering them less.

Hi Mike, It doesn't look like our Local temps will be lower than 50 for the next 2 weeks.  I have a bunch of unripen figs and I am still holding out hope.  But that hope is lessening with each day.  I am trying to decide whether to keep the 100+ unripe figs as Brebas or to pick them and focus on next year's growth.

I have four baby Celeste fig tree, not even a year old and I live in Zone 7 ,Long branch,NJ, should I take them in now, they have no fruit on them? Should I bring my olders ones in, I have two one year olds, a two year old and a three year old,I thought when the leaves fall off you should bring them in? Thank you for your help

Hi acient3,
It is still too soon. You could wait until November to put them inside.
It is important to keep the sheltered time as short as possible, or the trees may wake up while in storage and that's a drama to handle.
