Hello,

Pardon my manner :) I'm not quite familiar with this forum yet. Other forums I've been in normally have a separate section where newbies introduce themselves to the members of the community.

So here we go... I just started to get really interested in gardening a little over two years ago. Last year I only planted some veggies, cucumbers, etc and it went very well. Earlier this year I planted different varieties of sugar canes, Mandarins, Lychees, dwarf papayas, Bananas and Longgan. They are all doing really well. However, in zone 8a I know I will have to get me a portable greenhouse to protect some of my tropicals. A couple of weeks ago I started looking for fruit plants that may do well in my area without any protection. Then I came across this site and found tons of information, tips, and ideas of growing figs... not to mention hundreds of mouth-watering pictures as well. I remembered eating my first fig last fall given by my landlord and I really liked it. It was green fig but I don't know what variety.

I little about where I live:
Magnolia, Arkansas
Zone 8a
I doesn't get extremely cold here. Maybe light frost for some of the nights and mornings during winter. However, summer may get really hot and really humid.

Looking forward for some good times in this forum.

Peter

Welcome to the forum, Peter! Are you planning on growing in-ground eventually? If I were you, I would stay away from portable greenhouses if at all possible. Looks like you are into tropicals. You will need something permanent.

Peter,

Welcome.

Hopefully a fancier forum format will arrive in time, but for now it is very simple. It has come a long way in 5 years, and the hope is that this is just the beginning. We only ask for basic civility. After that, learn, enjoy, share and prosper.

Ruben, pitangadiego,

Thank you for the warm welcome!
I wish I could build me a permanent greenhouse. However, currently I live in a rented house. I'm a recent graduate and still saving some money to buy a house. Hopefully in next year or two I can have my own place and by then I can move some of the plants in-ground.

Hi Peter....

You are in good company.  This forum and its members will provide all the help you will ever need.  Many here, also grow exotic tropical fruit trees.  Just sit back and enjoy the ride....and ask questions.

Welcome!

Thanks folks... and hi to all the Peters in this forum :)

landscapewitch, thank you for the invitation. Unfortunately it is a little too far to the south from where I live. I hope there will be one a little closer next time :)
