Newby fig fly

Hey group,
Im just now getting into gardening and im truely loving it. Ive been lookong around for fig trees here in michigan with no luck at all. I was hoping to find someone whose willing to send a or a few cuttings to a budding green thumber. I had my eye on desert king but i would love to try my hand at any in hopes of growing them.
Thanks in advance for reading and hope to hear back. Im also in zone 5

To all new or prospective members

Welcome to the forum, come on in.

There a lot of very generous members here and there are a lot of cuttings, and even trees gifted frequently.  It is somewhat a general rule that newbies tell us something about yourself, where you are located, ask a few questions, and generally hang around for a while before asking for "stuff".  It is also recommended that you offer to pay for shipping and offer trades when your cuttings root and grow.  By telling us where you are can open up the door to meeting other members in your local area and you can possibly buy a tree or cuttings from them and save on shipping.

I would recommend that you go to a local nursery in your area and buy your first fig and "hang around" for a while.

Or not.

I completely understand :). I intend on staying around forsure.

Im also fairly new at this I bought cuttings from people on the forums, and ebay this last winter. I did see some Chicago hardy figs at family farm and home. What part of Michigan are you in?

Thats awesome! Ive been looking for them at my local stores but no luck. Im in saginaw michigan and plan on visiting the nursery near me tomorrow or calling to see if they have any in. Ive brought things from there before but have never seen figs and doubt if anywhere here sales them. I will keep looking tho, and thought about ebay or amazon as well. They may be the ways to go im thinking.

Most figs can be grown almost anywhere in containers.
if you are willing to acquire the knowledge, cost & the workload to grow in containers then most fig varieties are candidates except Smyrna & capri figs best saved for wasp territory.

To grow figs in ground takes a little more understanding of your area's climate & terroir.   It comes down to ripening time.
Late ripening figs will not produce ripe figs in-ground.   I am in zone 6 & grow many figs in ground. Best performing are mount etna types and select others.

Its a lot of fun so go to it and reap the reward of delicious figs.
