Niagara Black Main 2016

This fig is in its 3rd season and is growing in a 5 gallon SIP.  This variety is thought to be related (or identical to) Longue d'Aout.  NB and LdA are my most upright growers.  I harvested the first ripe fig off of this one on August 7, 2016.  As of today none of the LdA figs are close to being ripe yet.  I don't know if that is a real difference between varieties or just differences between these two plants this year.  The NB was had a meaty texture with subtle flavor tones of caramel.  It was not really a berry profile to me.  It also wasn’t overly sweet.  I left this one on long enough, I thought.  There was no latex when I picked it.  Maybe next time I'll push it a bit longer and hope the ants/critters don't find the fig.

Note: I edited the title of the post to correct misspelling of Niagara.

Hi Steve:
Nice looking fig! It looks exactly like my LdA. Thanks for the photos.

Your fig looks wonderful and your description of caramel tasting sounds incredible!

I was thinking this morning as I was eating steel cut oats with brown sugar, walnuts and raisons, that "brown sugar" is perhaps a more accurate descriptor of the flavor than "caremel".  Either way, a very tasty fig.

Hey Steve ,

Don't give up on this fig , when properly ripe it will be of the best figs you've ever tried .

John

Thanks for the update. It is a fig of high quality.

I think i read somewhere that you are growing it Eli , is that the case ?

John

I've had my tree for 2 years ..it grows very well and last summer I got to taste my first fig which I thought was very good

John, thanks for the encouragement regarding this variety.  It's been a very busy Spring as I am establishing a new orchard with all sorts of fruit trees and my Niagara Black needs desperately to be root pruned and transplanted before it fully leafs out.  I will need to move it up the prioritization list.

Hi John,
I am growing NB thanks to a generouse member who carried
It Barerooted From canada.

I dont have LDA so it covered that in my collection too

Thanks John for sharing it around.

Thanks for the feedback everyone .
One thing is to resist picking this fig early . It will still taste good but nowhere near what it can be if allowed to wrinkle up and drip honey . I also find that it keeps ripening in cold weather where others stop . The cold also seems to bring out another great flavour profile .
So whether this is the same as LDA or related is up to those who have both to decide , but either way it's a variety I always look forward to with anticipation .

John

Nice looking fig Rewton.
Thanks for sharing the pics.
Johnparav, thanks for the cuttins I've got from you true masterfull I will taste mine this year .They are 4 feet tall now. Thank you.

I've always said if one day I could only grow one fig it would be this one. Like John says it does well ripening even in our cool weather. Looking forward to tasting it again this year.

These photos show the colour change over a 2-3 week period. The fig in the first pic had drooped and was soft to the touch. It started dripping honey once the burgundy colour was more prominent and did so for a week before I picked it. Even then it could have gone longer.

around what time of the year did you harvested yours last season?.
Thank you

I believe it was around the middle of September. Those pictures were from the year before and was Sept. 10th but could have gone a bit longer.
