Nixon Peace Fig (China Honey) - experiences?

For some reason, I had read of this fig before but don't recall why.  Is anyone here growing this fig?

I visited with some CRFG friends yesterday and met up with them today and they gave me a cutting of the Nixon Peace Fig which Jon shows listed under Peace at http://figs4fun.com/Var_P_info.html#PEACE but no photos, etc.  My friends acquired this when in Arizona in 2011 for the CRFG's annual Festival of Fruit.  Their tree has been greatly challenged by gophers who find this tree very tasty, apparently.  I was told that they read online that his is a large yellow fig that is exceptionally sweet.  I only received the one cutting and it was a little dry (again, due to gophers, the tree was wilted when cuttings were taken), but I'm hopeful it will grow for me.

wow, did they turn the entire tree into little cutting?

Harvey,
If you get me the cutting I'll tell you all about it...
(next year, LOL)

Thanks, Aaron, but the cutting is already on my propagation mat! My friend did cut up the entire tree and is trying to root most pieces himself with plans to share one remaining cutting to another CRFG friend.

By the way, to add to what Jon showed on the variety information, my friend said the original Arizona tree was cut down to make room for a satellite dish but that several people in Arizona are growing it.

Side note: I suspect President Nixon did not obtain an import permit from APHIS! :)

Oh, I remember now, my friend also said that they read a report that said "Kadota tastes like cardboard by comparison".  Looks like that came from this page which has some photos - http://www.phoenixpermaculture.org/forum/topics/china-honey-nixon-peace-fig

Harvey - you mentioned above that you put the cutting on your prop. mat. I've never used one for figs - the rooting results have always been good without it and despite that I don't keep my house very warm (mid-60s). Using the mat, do you notice a quicker rooting time? I have mats that I use for many of my garden seedlings. Without the mat, I'd say my average cutting rooting time is between 2 and 3 weeks. Maybe I should start using one?

The Arizona chapter of CRFG just held a scion exchange event this past Saturday here in Phoenix. I was fortunate enough to get a Nixon Peace Fig cutting there. I am new to figs so I passed the cutting along to an experienced local friend to get started.

It is supposed to be an excellent fig.  I have a small tree but it has not produced fruit yet.  In this area it is usually referred to as China Honey.  It is supposed to be one of the best fig varieties in China that was gifted to Nixon's U.S. delegation to China in 1972.  There are photos and info about it on the Valley Permaculture Alliance forum website.  People who grow it in this area claim that it is one of the very best figs.

Hi harveyc,
How many nodes ?
Perhaps try one or two single nodes cuttings, and the remaining as planned by you ... just saying :)

Did a reader get it from Encanto Farms cuttings ?

Wow ,the fig looks awesome Harvey. I really hope it grows for you. Great find.

Joe, I did find several photos in the Phoenix permaculture site and saw you were involved in the discussions and hoped you would join in.

jds, my cutting has 4 nodes.  It's staying intact, especially since it was a bit dried out anyways.

Arne, I've got four 2' x 4' benches with propagation mats and find that figs root faster at 80-85F and that some weaker ones are less likely to die.  I frequently have trees ready for sale in 9-12 weeks.  It's a system that works well for me so I'm sticking with it.  I have a thread I started with my use of ProMix HP that gives more details.

It looks great! Keep us posted

All, I have a friend looking for the Chinese Honey/Nixon Peace fig. Can any of you sell cuttings of your tree? There is a seller on eBay, but I don't trust the veracity of the cuttings. The seller is using photos taken by Charlie Lucking on the Phoenix Permaculture forum. If you have the tree, why not use your own photos?
Thanks, Laura

Harvey,
I sure missed your chestnuts this last fall. My year was just down-right bizarre and the season got by me before I realized it.
I have a 1 gallon Nixon tree.
A friend and I both bought last year and the cuttings were in terrible shape. We each only got 1 plant out of 5 (if I remember correctly).
I have been trying to get this one for about 5 years and am very excited.
Mine is just coming out of dormancy and looks good.
Good luck with yours.

Is this the same fig as Taiwan Gold?

I'm pretty sure that's a reputable seller. They are from the Phoenix area and that fig is owned by a lot of people there.

Holy Smokes, someone's using my pics?!?!?!  I can't find the ebay ad, can someone point me to it please?

By the way, the tree is super-vigorous and the fruit delicious, and lots of it. Brebas are very large (not quite baseball size).

Here is the ebay auction:

Charlie, I'm pretty sure you know who this is. I messaged him last night and he's an active member of the AZRFG.

Thanks Nate - appreciate your message, I'm not concerned.

I have two of them that I bought last year, they have been fairly slow Growers. I thought that they seemed similar to Tashkent or the Uzbek fig.

I bought cutting from the same person in 2015.  Mine did well however they didn't fruit since they were in a too small pot.  Just never got them potted up so not the plants fault.  I'll see if I can do better this year.  I have Tashkent so I should be able to compare them.

so does this officially mean that eBay seller lo2358 is a legit source?

I have sent him a message requesting pics from the tree / leaf these cuttings are being taken off of...with no response after 2 days.

He is down to $10.00 for 3 cuttings buy it now! I had to do it so I will just have to wait and see.The picture looks like my Orpan fig.

eBay seller lo2358 his name is Scott.  He is very helpful and resourceful. He did confirm that he is a member of the CRFG from the Arizona chapter. He answers your question in a very timely manner. I'm looking forward to receiving the Nixon Peace cuttings from him.

@gardencrochet

Thank you for the reply!  He did respond with a photo of his tree in his backyard and some information about crop times etc.

I have been interested in this fig for some time now. Thanks everyone.

Cheers!
