Hi All,
I started cuttings for the first time this past spring, and while I've had great success and growth, I'm seeing no branching. I have a Celeste that's four feet tall with no laterals and two Panaches that are right behind it with no laterals, and am noticing the same behavior in basically all the others (Alma, Carini, G. Nero, Preto, M. Beauty, RDB, etc).
When the cuttings were potted up from cups they went into a Promix BX soil with diluted weekly amendments of liquid fish 4-1-1. I was trying to focus on growth and green, thus the extra Nitrogen, yet using half strength to keep them from getting lanky.
Once potted up to 5 gallon, the mix became 2/3 Promix BX, 1/3 compost, a pinch of azomite, and a small handful of granular fertilizer 5-3-4.
Like I said growth has been impressive for things that were 5" sticks five months ago.
I have the feeling that these need to be headed to force laterals, but do I do this once dormant as with normal heading of fruit trees or... now? I'll need to do something as these will be telephone poles soon.
Thanks in advance,
Marc
