OT Jackfruit seeds or plants

I am looking for USA SOURCE for Jackfruit trees or seed.

The Asian Market in the county next to mine sells fresh jackfruit. Do you have something like that where you live?

If you can get seeds from the actual fruit, check with your local supermarkets. I even saw jackfruit in central Arkansas at Kroger, not known to be a purveyor of exotic fruits.

Trade Winds is a good source but with Jackfruit if you germinate them from seed you are looking at a much longer period (5-7 years) before they will fruit.

They do germinate very easily and are vigorous growers.

Better to go with grafted plants as they will also be true to the parent as there are several varieties with different characteristics and grafted varieties can sometimes fruit in the first or second year.

Good luck.

I grew up with a huge jackfruit tree in our backyard in South India. So many delicious fruits that we had to give many away! Brings back such memories.

Jackfruits are the epitome of tropical trees. I would be surprised to see them grow in Texas. They grow very well in South India but dont fruit in North India where it gets under 5 degrees Celsius in winter.

One of my friends tried growing a tree in Orange County CA (USDA zone 10b-11) and it struggled through their winters even to survive. I have heard that people use light bulbs and heating mats to keep them warm in winter.

They are almost always grown from grafts in India as they fruit much faster and they dont always come true from seed.

Anyway, not to discourage you! Good luck.

The only place in the continental USA that Jackfruit can be grown outside and bear fruit is South Florida.

I have three growing in pots that I started from seed here in Tennessee. They are a couple of years old now and a couple feet tall.  I got the seeds from a store bought fruit. I just grew them as an experiment.  I was planning on throwing them away this year because I know they will never grow here and moving them around in their pots is starting to seem kind of pointless.  I have a Mamey Sapote I started the same way and am probably going to toss it also.

Not quite true, I have seen fruiting trees through out Orange county and even in Hermosa Beach. The trees however don't produce as well as south Florida. The Jackfruit genetics seem to determine the fruiting in southern California a great deal.
