From what I know, the original tree was brought from Greece by George Photopoulos (along with an olive tree that he kept in a heated pot at the entrance of the restaurant). The tree overhung the sidewalk and a few times, I saw people grab figs from the passenger side of the car. The restaurant closed last year and the tree has since been cut down. Thanks to Dragos, this one was saved. The original tree is still visible on google maps.

Very nice info. Thanks for bringing it up again Alan. I hope all is well with you bud. I can't believe it's been almost a year.
The little tree is doing fine and now that I know that it did come from Greece it sure means a lot more.
Thanks Barnhardt for the story and all the nice info. Oh and of course the link .

Awww, this is a great event!!!

This is a pretty tree & a very cool story. Thx for posting it, Alan.

Is this going to happen again this year?

Hmmm. How many people would plan to come this year? I live in NC on the coast.
I don't know who would be willing to make the drive, but maybe I could host. (I fell like Dr. Seuss after that.)

Kinda a crazy year for me as well because we are expecting a new baby the first week of July. hehe

Well the baby will be here and with a toddler running around it would be a handful. I am in Havelock NC, so that might not be the best location.  However, I'm sure we can accommodate up to 30 people if we decide we can do it.

Yea, that is far.  I think I'll hold off on hosting and wait to see if anyone else steps up.

Yes. It will happen this year.

Who's interested?

I'm in!!

I'm in.

I am in.  Glad to help prepare any way I can.

I am in Dennis.

I would like to come to Figfest this year if there is room is available. Here is a picture of my beginning Fig adventure. I have nursed these since last February from cuttings to cup to pot and this past weekend I put them in the ground. They are from front to back a RDB, Strawberry Verte and Zingerella. If you notice the number 3 spot is vacant. That one is earmarked for a VDB. I have tried to root 4 cuttings of VDB and none made it. I plan to try again this winter.

After typing this I tried to attach pictures but it says they are too big. How can I get around that?

Let's try thisStrawberry Verte.jpg  RDB - Copy.jpg  Zingerella - Copy.jpg  ALL-Copy.jpg

I'm in also.

Greetings to everyone!

Dragos

You know if I can I will be there.

What are you talking about Alan?

Well, that's OK. It is a tad bit early. I expect many will drop as summer closes in.

FYI I may not post much but I lurk once in a while. ; )

Sharon,
I plan on using the same email contact list used last year.  So, if your email address has changed, let me know.

Next month,  I will choose a date and advise all planned attendees.  At the moment August 13 is the tentative data placed in my mind.  But it's not official.  I know it won't be August 20th, that's my wedding anniversary.  Around mid June, I will confirm the date.  This year, I plan on making a fig cake and a few more fig recipes provided my fig trees put out like they did last year!  Hardy Chicago, Big Al, Don Fortiss, Texs Blue Giant, Lyndhurst White, Black Celeste, Piedmonte, Texas Everbearing and few others should be ripening around Aug 13th.  I will start a new post next month with a list of attendees.  This post is getting too large.  THis year, I will video the fig fest!

After all the fun we had last year, I've been trying to decide when to hold another fig festival.  Due to my new job, commute and time, I wasn't going to have it this year.  But last weekend, my son came over and helped me get a lot of work done.  So, the fig festival at my place is back on!  If you attended last year and your contact information has not changed, then still have your information and will be send you an invitation.

This year's event will be held August 13th.  It will start at 11AM.  Food will be provided, donations are accepted.  If you plan on attending, email my gmail account at (dennis.johnson386).

So, shoot me an email if you plan on attending.  It will be at Charlotte, NC.
...more  to come

Hi.
Id love to make it out there. Well have to see how my work schedule looks like.
Ill keep my fingers crossed.
