Panache cuttings experiment-question

I got about 12 cuttings of Panache mid January and I wanted to trade some but I was too busy to do it so I decided to root them. To my surprise all of them rooted. I was rooting some other cuttings too at the same time and did not have space to keep them in the house so I decided to pot few of them in the same pot. Now i have 3 small pots 1 with 4 cuttings and 2 with 3 cuttings each. The pot with 4 cuttings I put it immediately outside in a covered patio area which i transformed in a green house hanging some plastic sheets on the opened side of the patio. I even put a small heater and i guess the temps inside were around mid 50's. There I kept some tropicals. The cuttings i put outside did not have any buds on them at that time. The other 2 pots I kept in the house. The cuttings in the 2 pots I kept in the house developed buds and leaves faster than those outside. Also the leaves of those inside are greener than of those outside. But in the end all of them are doing fine....Here comes my question.. When can I separate the cuttings not to damage the young roots ? Thanks __________________ Pat Menlo Park , CA zone 9

Tough question. I'd wait till they go dormant. They have co-mingled. You could soak the entire rootballs in a bucket of water, swish all the dirt off and then gently separate. There may be some damage, but figs are tough, so this might work fine. I just did that very thing, but only to one fig that fungus gnats were bothering. It's no longer in a pot. It didn't miss a beat. I soaked it's roots in mosquito dunk, gave it new soil and we planted it in ground. Sooner is better. Those figs are young and spring is here. I would separate them soon when you think they are ready for potting. Moisten them and gently separate them into their own containers with pre-moistened soil (not too wet). You have a green thumb with Panache! Definitely do it ASAP. The longer you wait the more the roots will be tangled. I was afraid to do it now thinking that the roots are very fragile at this stage- about a 1.5 month from rooting. I'll try it and see what happened. Thanks everybody. __________________ Pat Menlo Park , CA zone 9

I went outside and separate the 4 of them in water. It was very easy with no root damage :-) . You guys were right...the roots at this stage were not so tangled. Now they are happy in their own pot. I have 2 more to separate and i will end up with 11 panache pots WooHoo. Love them here are the pics __________________ Pat Menlo Park , CA zone 9
