Panachee finally ripens in NY City!

My bull-headed insistence on growing a Panachee here in New York finally bore fruit today as I harvested the first of several ripening fruits. Pretty good, sweet flavor, small sized fruit, with a large, open eye. I hope to have about ten ripen before the season ends. You will notice no stripes-the message from Bayflora was that it is common not to see stripes until the tree matures a bit more, though I will have my doubts until I see stripes! Wonderful!!! I had one and it died and wasn't going to get another. Now I think I will especially since you state it was good tasting. I don't think you have panachee, unfortunately. Bay Flora is full of crap giving out that kind of information. The first figs my panachee ever produced were striped as is every fig it has produced, though some of them have had the stripes fade as they ripened. Yes to confirm Harvey's comments my rooted Panachee cutting from last winter had the striped growth and produced a single fig that was also striped (but eventually dropped). Harvey You are probably right, I checked their website and based on the tree characteristics I believe they sent me a White Genoa, that may be the fruit I pictured in this post, but I am going to get to the bottom of their BS __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

Harvey Good call, Bayflora have admitted their mistake and are shipping a replacement tree out asap. I wanted a White Genoa anyway. Smaritza am sorry but Panachee experiment will have to start from scratch next year, will keep u posted! __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

It may be a Panache that has "reverted" (I have called it "reverse") to the all green form it had before it "mutated" into the striped form. Any Panahce I have ever seen had striped from from the very first fruit, and the new growth wood is striped. I have never seen an exception. The grocery store was all stocked up on Panachee (Tiger) Figs... What is the best climate for Panache? I planted one in the ground at the beginning of the season. I found a 3 year old tree, but it always stayed in a green house. I currently have ONE fig on the entire tree. Its about 5 feet tall and has not leafed out much at all. I'm along the coast in New Haven Connecticut. Should I leave it in the ground and protect it from the harsh New England winters for another season, or would I have more luck potting it and keeping it indoors? Gabriel My plan and suggestion is as follows: Panachee does best in the desert southwest and needs a long growing season. I would put it in a large pot, and put it in a greenhouse around first week of March, with a heater if necessary, in order to encourage the plant to break dormancy a month earlier than normal northeast figs. Pay close attention to water and nutrients in your container culture. Bring it into full maximum sunlight as soon as the weather permits. Try this experiment, you will get lots of figs but I cannot guarantee they will ripen, it's a crapshoot. Several members are trying Panachee in the northeast, with very mixed results. __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

They should ripen in your zone in pot on cement or rocky surface. They did here near Chicago no greenhouse just the annual fig shuffle for several years until i gave it away.

Well I guess this means the Panachee I bought is not a real Panachee either because mine doesn't have any stripes either. Also as I mentioned in another thread it grows really good but has never produced the first fig so I didn't have the fruit to judge. I understand nursery's have large inventory but its really frustrating growing something for several years then finding out that they sent you the wrong plant and it seems to be happening more and more.

these are pictures of the fig tree I got from rain tree that I ordered as Panachee - anyone know what it really is? Been long time since i used that program but the file used has to be the "IMG" file same with photobucket as there are several files to copy and past into the message box but the "IMG" is the one to use. File must be under 1 megabyte for forum to accept. Other wise with window based system go to micrsoft page and look for "Power tools image resizer" its a small program that self installs. Once installed you simply right click with mouse your picture and a small dialog box appears to resize small medium or large and this takes only seconds to resize keeping your original in same folder. It works excellent for windows based system .

yes its in a field thats where all my fig bushes are no shade all day and in full sun so 8+ hours a day all other fig bushes produce lots of figs, I will try the pinching next spring - any idea what var. it may be?

I am bumping this because after nearly 4 years waiting, I am finally harvesting my own Panachee here in New York City. Here are pics from today's fruit, it has been a real learning experience, and it never ends. These fruits cannot sit on the tree and become droopy. They have a tendency to sour unless you catch them at just the right time. I lost a lot of leaves to sunburn and spider mites this season as well. Its all good-next season we'll do it better. Chris, yes indeed, Bayflora sent me two replacement trees, the first one died. They are stand-up people, their trees are healthy, very little sign of fmv if any. They also let me keep the White Genoa they initially sent me, its a strong grower that makes very nice white figs. I would recommend them. As we all know, label mix-ups occur all the time even among small-time growers. Imagine if it was a large nursery, its bound to happen. __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

Hi JDS The tree is currently in a five gallon pot, will move it up to 10 or 15 next spring. The growth habit is a long main stem with about 4 branches at the top of the canopy. I would say it is of moderate growth habit. 2 "incidents" caused heavy leaf loss this year, so the plant is currently not as lush as it will be in future. 1. Transition from greenhouse into sun was done too quickly, causing a few leaves to get "crisped." 2. Spider mites caused heavy leaf loss while I was on vacation in Italy. Next year I will pinch the highest branch to encourage branching, since the plant is getting too tall for my greenhouse.. __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

My first Panachée of this year. Very sweet and tasty, surely caprified, with bloody red pulp and crunchy seeds. Unfortunately i didn't take pics of the interior.
