242.JPG 243.JPG 259.JPG 284.JPG First two pictures are of an old fig that has been in my town since before i was born, people call it la ficura traone .There are fig trees bigger than this one, so when i said I used to climb these trees when I was a boy, now you know how massive these fig trees were. Next picture is of figs growing in roman ruins in Sepino, Sepinum is were my ancestors the Sannites used to have their encampment, until the roman empire took over after 3 wars. Last picture is of Acciano fig also from my hometown and a very good fig. I will post more pics when I have more time.

Mario,

I my mind's  eye I can see a burro loaded with figs being led to Castel di Sangro.  Someday I will get there. Meanwhile, your figs are bearing fruit here.

I was in Italy a few weeks ago and I have never seen more fig trees in my life. Along the Amalfi Coast they are all over, just look on the side of the road and they are there. A fig lovers dream. Having read the recent posts on bringing in cuttings from abroad I kept my distance. It was such a tease, but I didn't cut a single one.
Thought about it. Here is a photo of me in a street near the Tower Of Pisa, just growing out of a crack near some restaurants.
Made me smile and think of our group

I literally said "Jesus Christ that's a big fig tree." when I saw the pics.  Biggest I've seen.  Thanks.

Years ago, there was a fig tree growing in the Pelham Bay section of the North-East Bronx, that had a trunk diameter of at least 10" across.  For The Bronx, that's a big, fig tree.  I'd pass it on my way to school...PS 71.  This was in the late-50's to early 60's.  The tree was there until the early 90's until the land was sold.   The tree was chopped down to make room for two, cheap, flake-board, houses to be built, where one house stood.  The tree was never protected...too big to cover, and must have been growing there for 50 years, or more.  The house and land was once, probably, a small, rural, farm.

I used to love to steal figs from that tree, going and coming, from school.  Those were the days when my 9-transistor, portable radio played the sweet harmonies of the Shirelles, the Drifters, and the Marvelettes were waiting for a special letter.

Funny story my father told me while I was in Italy. He said when he was younger he would load up the donkey about 4 am, so he could get to Castel di sangro around 7am . He figured if he got there before anybody else he could sell out all his figs and come home early. As soon as he got sold out, he started heading home. As he got in the mountains it started dumping rain ,thunder and lightning he said he could not see 10 feet in front of that donkey. He put some plastic on his head sat on the saddle and let that donkey take him home the donkey walked almost 3 hours without any guidance. He had been to Castel di sangro so many times he already knew his way home.
